Last minute delay for extreme skydiver Fearless Felix for his 23-mile jump to Earth

Winds threatened to stop extreme skydiver Felix Baumgartner's free-fall from space into the southeastern New Mexico desert today.

The extreme sky-diver will attempt what has never been done before - a fall from 23 miles up in space, which he hopes will break the sound barrier.

But wind nearly ruined the death-defying plunge, as his three-hour ascent by a high-altitude balloon cannot start unless wind speeds are below two miles an hour.

But after a two-hour delay, the winds dropped enough to allow preparations to begin, and Baumgartner hopes to launch at 11.30am Mountain Time (6.30pm GMT).
