The story is a little spotty about causualties. They just mention that there are a number of people not acounted for. I bet there are a lot of them. A blast that big will make a lot of people disappear. They will probably never account for them. Most of them would be a pink mist in the middle of the explosion. The Russianss will never admit how many people did not go home to there families tonite.

It would still be amazing to see a real nuclear shot. The videos of Castle Bravo still always amaze me.

If it were an underground nuclear explosion, there would be no mushroom cloud either. Too high above or too low below = no mushroom cloud.

My grandfather was present at a number of atomic bomb tests including Bikini Atoll tests and Upshot-Knothole. He always thought it was both awesome and terrifying. Also said that the military were idiots because they sent people into recently bombed areas almost immediately following the explosions. Amazing from a distance? Yeah definitely unless you're one of the scrubs that they send in to collect whaever test material may be left out there.

Conventional munitions can and do create mushroom type clouds (without the nuclear 'flash') provided sufficient amount goes up.

400 TONS of old munitions slated for disposal went off out in the middle of nowhere.

That is 8 million pounds of decrepit old Cold War era crap that met its disposal somewhat prematurely but quite spectacularly.

Tragic about the human losses, which we may never accurately know, but human impact was minimal due to the remoteness of the accident site.

Yeah, a report said they saw a box of smoking munition in the middle of the ammo dump slated for demolition. They ran for bunkers and safety before it blew.
