What's the best street legal dirt bike to escape TSHTF? EMP proof.
A street legal dirt bike can go cross country, on the road, and around most messes and crashes. It's light enough to drag out of sight. What's the best that can carry two and be relatively quiet and reliable?

no motorcycle is EMP proof. they all have some kind of electronic part that will be fried by a EMP..

charging systems would die from EMP.

to be EMP proof it need a mechanical ignition and those ended in the mid 1970s so I would suggest a Honda XL250 or XL350 but it is not only the bikes capability to get arround obsticles, its more the riders and that is not a skill that is just picked up all the sudden.

your pick up coils would be dead from a EMP.

just look up the electrical systems even on the old dirt bikes, even the points models have electronics that will die from a EMP.

All you need is a diesel engine and a way to charge the glow plugs - which you can do with a hand crank to generate electricity and charge capacitors, then flip a switch to release current to the glow plugs... then turn the engine... and wala.

Diesel is the doomsday engine.

Why do you think all of the Volkswagen Passat, Jetta and Golf TDI engines cars are selling like hotcakes?

Great prepper cars. AND they will run on biodiesel too.

Perfect prepper car.

If a Volkswagen TDI car is too small, then get a GM 6.2L V8 Diesel or a Dodge Diesel truck.

Same thing applies.

Just get a hand crank to juice up capacitors, and a switch to release poewr from capacitors to glow plugs.

You can buy parts for under 100 bucks to have a working engine after an EMP attack. Easy.

The charging system has electronics but the ignition is a magneto with a points breaker plate.

The bike will still run after an EMP blast but you would have no lights.

i saw a great bike just recently yamaha tty 200 i think its road trail not emp proof per se but carry some basic electronics and you would be right.

store the thing well and you would not likely have any problems

emp is still an unknown science there is much unknown about what would and would not be disabled.

i also like the ROKON but its not street legal

FEARMONGER

from everything i know about EMP and electronics
chances are the ig coil would survive as would the battery
volt regs would be fried probably most resistors woul be fine.

off these components you have listed here only the ignition coil is needed for it to start/run. add to that list the ignition condensor so the coil and condenser are suspects and easy/small enough to get spares/backup to keep in a simple farraday cage until needed. problem soved, no?

Re: What's the best street legal dirt bike to escape TSHTF? EMP proof.
There are a lot of people that have this hollywood idea of EMP, but the reality is that it fries thin wires and complex circuitry, a bike with a simple magneto system would be fine, as would anything that does not have a electronic ignition for that matter. If a device is properly shielded, it should withstand an EMP burst anyway.
It is, to me, sad how fast people forget the FOUNDATIONS of our fine country! This country was built by an armed population capable of fending for themselves, and will be lost by couches full of potato-sheeple riding their 52" HD-LEDTV's into the orwellian sunset. :(

Re: What's the best street legal dirt bike to escape TSHTF? EMP proof.
any motorcycle with points is basically emp proof. as far as voltage regulators for the charging system, if single phase (2 wire), then you just replace an electronic one with an early model (pre-79) points type reggy from a honda c90. if 3 phase (3 wires) then you use one from a k-model honda 750. many of the CDI ignition bikes are actually fairly emp proof as their ignition systems are designed to use a high excitation voltage for the iggy coils. placing harnesses within doubled conduit(metallic, not plastic), and iggy and reggy boxes inside 2 nested metal boxes that are grounded actually isolates the electronics (like a faraday cage). emp is actually vastly over-rated as doom worthy, the only real world experience with it was in the days of tubes as amplifiers.

....Or you could use propane, which is the ultimate starting fluid for a diesel engine - no need for glow plugs. Just get a Coleman or Worthington 1# propane bottle and the hose off any camping appliance that uses them - give the engine a shot, and presto, she fires over...

Wrong - most bikes through the late 80's had a magneto ignition that also provided electricity for the bike / battery charge. Nothing that would be fried with an EMP.

Op - I'm a Kawasaki fan myself, and I don't mind hunting parts, but for a newbie, I would get a mid '70s honda. I wouldn't worry so much about being street legal - if TSHTF, then law enforcement will have their hands full with other matters, they will probably leave you alone if you don't use your turn signals.
