That is more than likely going to get you and/or your place in a shitty situation. Get cameras and alarm system. Only point that gun at someone if you need to defend yourself and you truly have intentions on using it for that purpose.

Nip it in the bud right away. Call 911 and tell them you saw someone running out your back door on your way in tonight. You think it was your neighbors. Tell them where they live. It'll be your word against theirs, but now, the cops are familiar with them. The cops will probably go to talk to them. If they get mad at you, tell them you didn't get a good look, just thought it was them. But police have their info, they know it. And they're suspected as the number one place to go to in case of a problem at your home.

leave something out you don't care about, down by their place and old tool or something.

take a picture of it laying there and get a motion camera if you can.

if it comes up missing you got yourself pretty good case going already.

once they see the cameras their behavior will change. if they are really bad and you suspect they will damage the cameras then get two mounted in differnt spots pointing in same area so that if they damage one the other will capture that act.

See, this is my thought. I have dogs, and they bark at anything but the bad guys. Big fail. The one dog would do major damage, though I think the criminal would have to be threatening.

burglars usually dont "hot prowl" (go into a house with occupants). so flashing a shotgun only tells them you have shit worth stealing (ghetto folks dont mind stolen firearms). if they're the "home invasion robbery" types, then you basically just tell them to kill you in your yard or at your front door if you flash arms. only idiots think showing a firearm is some kind of deterrant. pointing it at them on their back porch is a declaration of war. then you have to watch your back all the time. dont bark, and only bite when you have to. bake a couple of pies, and offer them one. even criminals dont like to victimize folks who treat them decently.

OP, I feel you. My neighborhood is turning less nice since too many idiots bought houses and turned them into rentals so now I have neighbors of the variety I moved into this neighborhood to avoid living around 18 years ago...I'm a single woman, no man around, only my grown sons who visit regularly but randomly enough to keep 'em guessing, particularly since there's always an extra vehicle parked aside from my daily go to work car. The losers next door don't work, have lots of in and out traffic and hang out on the sidewalk just this side of the hedge, can't tell them to F off as they're on public property but it does make gardening more of a chore than pleasure when I'm being surveyed and my stuff, tools etc stared at. They give off a menacing vibe and creep me out. Last week I came down the street in my car to pull in my driveway and one guy was walking up and down slapping a baseball bat in his hands like he's expecting something...I studiously ignore them. Don't want to know let alone befriend them, just hope they get kicked out soon or get hauled in for whatever illegal stuff they're involved in...wish I would overhear or see something to legitimately call the police...
For Christmas I'm getting a gun, my son taught me how to shoot at the firing range and I'm a good shot to 30 yards with a pistol and pretty sure I'd not hesitate if my life was endangered though I'd hate to take a life. You might try what I've done walking around with my cell phone pretending to have a conversation with someone, talking of "drug dealers" down the street and how the cops are watching them...or the neighbor 4 houses down who is buddies with the swat commander and is having a BBQ next week for all his police friends...or how they got undercover cops buying in the neighborhood getting ready for a sting...or how they just shut down some whatever 5 blocks over...just do it loud enough to be heard...or talk about the huge, badass German shepherd you are getting or babysitting...I kind of have fun with my non existent conversation partner, silly yes, but it makes me feel better.

my guess is you have little actual clue about criminals. burglars dont rob, robbers dont burgle. they are mutually exclusive niches. a hot prowl burglar is a serious rarity. translated, that means the average burglar will NEVER come to your home while you are actually there. so, where is the deterrant? if you aren't home, all the ridiculous posing with arms you may do ammounts to naught, except to show said burglar what kind of firearms you have for them to steal while you're out galavanting. as for robbers, well, if they get desperate enough, it just tells them that you have to be ambushed. if they fill you with buckshot while you mow the lawn, what detterant have you made effective use of? in both cases, you are just barking. the barking dog is a known factor. planning neutralizes known factors. the silent dog in the shadow is an unknown. the unknown fucks up even the best laid plan. never bark, only bite when you have to. ive lived in ghettoes for a half century now, and i dont get victimized, ever.

What I did was tape up a used target paper rife with holes in tight groupings on my back slider door (where he was looking).

Fucker stopped looking the next day.
