Mossberg model 500 12 GA 3" chamber, 24" slug barrel, pump action is 100% reliable at close or medium range, slugs will kill through body armour out to 150 Yds., buckshot is good to about 125 Yds.

Well went to guns fast...

Well ..... guns can be used as clubs at close range.

OP, even your club suggests a range of about 36 inches. Close in hand-to-hand, learn to use a pair of SOG seal knives -- the way SEALS use them. Become adept in Krav. Learn how to use anything laying around as a weapon.

Best of luck if the worst comes to pass.

I'm ok in self defense and still training, and I'm a critical thinker in objects lying around of how to use them. This thread isn't supposed to be about guns unless you have a preference for them in your hands in hand to hand. This is just a fun thread for what if type scenario's, and what weapon you would feel comfortable with using.

They do have some high quality stuff...fairly pricey though, and some of their designs are unnecessary. I do love their "The Phalanx" would love to get my hands on it at some point.

Very high quality steel. Check out the video of him chopping through a Chevy truck hood with "The Deuce". All blades are full tang. This Conan the Barbarian type steel, not that cheap chinese crap you find in blade stores at the mall.

I plan on ordering one in the next couple months. I like the "Mak-Daddy-O" too!

if want to wound warn and not just outright kill shooting someone coming at you with a simple bb gun or airsoft gun may be an option.... rounds are cheap and power at close range smarts....... remember your protecting from starving ppl.... it wont be a case where a foreign enemy is coming to just kill you. i know many ppl may disagree but id rather not have bodies piling up in my yard that i will need to remove and dispose somewhere else leaving my family unprotected.....

Close Encounters?

If chaos and anarchy are the Theme du jour, why would you let anyone you didn't know get within any close proximity to you?

Major error to be out & about at that time.

Being able to defend yourself with nothing but your flesh and your wits is a very important, often overlooked skill.

Mechanically speaking, shooting someone dead at 20 paces is relatively easy.

Breaking your attackers windpipe at a 45 degree angle one-handed is far more difficult. It's not an instant-kill, and they may actually survive it - but its a hell of a deterrent towards any further action from them. They wont be able to shoot you, because they're in panic-mode, oxygen deprivation happens fast when air cant get to the lungs but blood can.

My point in this is simple. If you are untrained in hand-to-hand combat of any kind, GET trained. At least a little. Flailing your arms about like a Kardashian whose creditcard got cut isn't gonna save you from fuck all.

Interesting thread.

Any suggestions for an "older woman"?

I went to buy a gun but found out I had to register it and had just read an article about the gov't enforcing stricter
laws in Oct. Not sure how true that all was but couldn't see paying $600 on a weapon to have the gov't come and take it away.

I'm open to any and all suggestions!

Thanks for the thread..

Start by looking into some womens defense classes. It's very possible that they have some that focus on different age groups.

Get yourself a few personal cans of Bear Spray pepperspray, and keep one readily available in your purse or jacket pocket at all times. If it rates at 1 Million Scoville units or more, you're golden :) I've taken that stuff on directly in a demonstration once - wouldn't ever do it willingly again, that's for sure.

The point of the bearspray is to temporarily incapacitate your attacker, which is totally the case if you make a good facial hit with their eyes open. Even if their eyes closed, when a person is sprayed in the face, their body naturally puts the hands to the face, which actually wipes the spray into their eyes...Get a good facial shot, and you can get away provided it was just one or two attackers.

also, it doesn't matter what age you are - a hard punch to the throat of an attacker is effective. Can't chase if ya can't breathe.

As far as guns you just need to get a 9mm to decrease kick-back so you can keep your accuracy. As far as a hand to hand weapon a small easily concealable knife is always a good bet just learn where to stick it groin, neck, femoral artery, shoulder, armpit ect ect. Women whether they realize it or not always have an advantage in a situation like that. 95% of the time you be perceived as weak and not be able to defend yourself. That will be your attackers fault but when you decide to attack make it fucking count. All those aforementioned area's of strike if you hit it with a knife twist it before pulling it out to ensure maximum amount of damage. Also another cool easily hide able weapon are these little badass things.

That is a spiked kubotan, and regular kubotan. They come in many different designs you can look them up and find which one suits you the best. But depending on the design they either have a stabbing effect or blunt force trama. Now unless you get a spike with them coming out of the knuckles you do not have to worry about punching, and they work with a woman's tendency to naturally downward swipes just turn your hand to a hammer fist. The blunt force wont be that equal to aforementioned blunt weapons but it will easily break any face bone you contact...nose and jaws are always good spots to hit. Hope this has helped.

That badboy is the ball headed war club, and Cold steel makes an awesome one for 40 bucks. What I like about it whatever it hits it completely obliterates. If you get the ball on target whatever the person was blocking with would be useless after a strike from it. There are vids on youtube of people using some on concrete blocks ect ect. If you watch those vids it looks very inefficient in that it takes 2 hands, and has a ridiculous wind up. Quite simply the people have no effing idea what they're doing it's easily used in one hand all you have to do is put a quick twirl to get the power momentum going then strike the target. Yes has a bit of delay, and takes some time to recover after a strike so you would need choose your strikes wisely. As long as you make contact though it's over.

That is a tonfa. Now what I like about it is it's flexibility you grip it with thumb up and it goes along the bottom side of your forearm. Now, because of it's design it's equally offensive and defensive how it lies along your forearm fits perfectly with your natural reaction to protect yourself with blocking with your forearm. It also allows for some interesting grips, and locks if one were so inclined but that's not really needed. Also the stub towards the top allows for quite a debilitating blow wherever it hits as, and on top of that the long end along with grip can allow for it to swing around for a baseball bat type strike which obviously very potent.

Personally I prefer blunt weapons in fight scenarios that are face to face. They may not have as high chance of instant kill, but if landing on whatever body part that part is pretty well done.

Now your turn GLPers, what you got for me?

Bouncing back to guns. I've shot a lot of .22 and .223/5.56. .22 is good for survival but in a firefight forget it. AR-15's are still light and you can carry a lot of ammo. And ammo availability should be good. One big difference, the AR can punch through much heavier cover.

22 for survival
AR-15 for a gun fight

there's not one army that carries .22 rifles. (except for maybe a silenced 22 pistol to take out dogs.)

Oh man...first with the freerunning. I love its something very fun to watch, and the guys video was awesome. But in a survival scenario much too many risks in that video, parkour can be excellent in evasion, but make it efficient not unnecessary.

With the Ninja Assassin clip, buddy its a Hollywood movie. Not saying those weapons are ineffective, quite the opposite. You simply cannot wield those weapons with that expertise you see in the film. Also that variation Kusarigama he has...man that takes YEARS to be skilled enough to actually fight with it.

Agreed Parkour takes years to learn, but just knowing some basics could get you out of trouble if overwhelmed by many. At least be able to flee to safety.

The Ninja moves aren't that hard to learn. I taught my 90# girlfriend how to throw knives with both hands and now she can do combos just like that video, from 1:16 on. Posted it to show people what is possible. When there are no bullets left, grab some steel!

Yes

Much higher velocity. Will not punch through body armor but multiple layers of clothing are nothing.

Bought the PMR-30 for my wife because of some physical limitations. Nice little pistol and nasty penetration.

For close encounters, non guns, my suggestions are:
- A good sturdy knife
- Extensible baton
- Tactical tomahawk (I am partial to the RMJ brand)
