He needed the shotgun and revolver to repel varmints from his tomato plants, which he was fertilizing, and which he was going to later can in the pressure cooker. I'm still working on the sulphur angle.  Potassium nitrate (salt peter), sulfur and charcol make black power...or the original gunpowder...not "smokeless powder", but it's still very potent and far more volitile... Simple recipe that has been around hundreds of years....there are also several other "items" you could cook up using those a few other simple ingredients...
