Saturn is actually farther away from the Earth than this comet is currently, and Saturn is quite visible to the naked eye. This is not the doom you were looking for. |

November 27th to 29th will be when it is at it's absolute brightest, and also when it is closest to the Sun. (Good luck seeing it though, as it will be right next to the Sun from our point of view) Again, since it is a comet, (and not a star) it does not generate it's own light and can only reflect our Sun's. However, it should still be a great show from mid October through mid December. |

If it's just a dot in the sky, it doesn't really matter to me how bright it is. If it's a massive orb with a huge tail, that's iconic, epic, scary and the stuff legends will be made of for ages to come. So which is it? |

Comet Holmes was bigger than the sun after it exploded, but it didn't disturb the Solar System. That's because it was about as dense as a light fog. This may be that comet, and could throw a very long tail. After late November, it should look amazing, provided it doesn't break up as it passes by the Sun.
