If you are referring to religious and cultural descriptions, well..... let's just say I don't put too much stock in what people from those times had to say about rare things they saw in the sky. (Sun, Moon, and even visible planets, sure those things they saw daily and figured out their timing. Comets, not so much.)

It isn't easy to find a dark-to-us object in a black sky.

It MAY get as bright or brighter than the full moon.
The brightness estimate is just that, an estimate.

There are plenty of amature astronomers with powerful enough scopes looking at the sky to verify or debunk the finding of this comet or to prove it is something other than what is being stated.
