Re: Why do some people constantly tell fake stories?
As many people lie frequently, PF [pathological lying] cannot be identified on the basis of excessive lying alone, but the qualitative nature of the pseudologue’s lies is
also quite distinct (cf. King & Ford, 1988; Weston, 1996; Wiersma, 1933). While the theme of lies can be stereotyped or varied in nature (Deutsch, 1922/1982), they are almost always dazzling or fantastical, and often develop into a complicated system of deception. The imaginative fluency of the lies tends to capture public attention, at least in the short term. The lies must keep a certain reference to reality, and though they are often unlikely, they are not beyond the realm of possibility (e.g., ‘I communicate with
aliens
’) (cf. Sharrock & Cresswell, 1989; Snyder, 1986). Under close scrutiny the lies can often be easily discredited, and for this reason the lying in PF is frequently noted to be destructive to the liar (cf. Akimoto, 1997; Hardie & Reed, 1998; Healy & Healy, 1915).

Completely fake stories? Drinking or talking shit, most of us exaggerate to some degree, simply to entertain and not look so boring and average, because face it, most people are boring and average.

Hell I'd prefer to hear the story of the time you got drunk, fought off 10 frat brothers, and banged the hottest sorority chick on campus, to the truth. That you kicked one frat guys ass and hooked up with some slutty drunk chick at a keg party.

Re: Why do some people constantly tell fake stories?
What are the reasons for people telling stories and lies? I know someone who would always lie. I'm not talking about a white lie either. I'm talking about anything from a big, fat lie to make an excuse for something, such as "Oh.. I can't make it in to work today. My uncle Red passed away last night", when really they were just lazy. Or make up a story that they got in a car accident or something.

Then I've heard them make up stories just for the hell of it, without any reason. My dad knows Steve Jobs and he used to work for Apple company in California.

Why do people feel the need to make up pretend stories and tell major lies for an excuse?

Is it for attention?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25265949

Studies have shown that people are pathological liars because of their childhood. If they grew up in an abusive home they learned lying got them attention.
So yes it is for attention, but after a while they don't know how to tell the truth.Lying becomes so easy for them that they themselves believe these lies.
Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.

Just trying to provide some insight; i find this subject very interesting.

and to answer your question, NO, I don't think I can name one person who "says true story" all the time. Many lies are harmless (little white lies) that function simply to maintain the illusion of civility between individuals in society, and/or to protect the person telling the lie from unnecessary harm that might result from being truthful.

In this universe/world of duality, it seems like every truth has some untruth in it, and viceversa, at least from a human perspective.

Do you disagree that there is rampant lying at GLP? It may be well-intentioned, or it may be the result of mental illness, but either way it does not serve any positive purpose and causes many to be mislead and confused. In my opinion, it is essentially another expression of evil in this world, and people who dismiss it as "harmless" are taking part in and perpetuating that evil.

Is truth subjective to ones personal perspective? What is truth then?

Because many times on GLP speaking ones own truth will result in a ban.

So things are sugar coated, or white lies introduced.

well sure, but I am mainly referring to the kind of threads where the OP says "my uncle gave me deep backside intel that Nibiru is going to cause a poleshift this thursday! prepare for DOOM!"... and then nothing happens. The False Prophets thread I linked has hundreds of examples of this. These are straight-up lies.. these people are not "speaking their own truth", they are just lying.

But yes, truth is subjective, that was the point I was trying to make.

I wasn't trying to prove that there are people that tell 100% truth.. I was agreeing with the OP of this thread, and posting academic explanations of pathological lying.

And, I agree with you, the situation is a global problem, lying is rampant and engrained in our culture, and my personal attitude is to be as truthful as possible. I don't think the problem will be solved though, I think this is part of human nature..

Re: Why do some people constantly tell fake stories?
What pisses me off are not the psychopaths like Bush (I miss him already) or Obama who just spew one lie after another,.. what pisses me off are the idiots who buy their lies at first and then pretend indignation when the lies become obvious. "Oh, oh, Bush lied about the WMDs" "OMG Obama lied about his entire past, and his entire platform".

As Bush said, "fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice,.. "

When people lie everyone should call BS, immediately instead of encouraging them.
