The United States is suffering the worst drought in 50 years. But crop damage may well have been avoided if high quality non-GM varieties were available to farmers. Further evidence is emerging that glyphosate-tolerant crops are ill-equipped to deal with drought, while high quality non-GM varieties are flourishing. Monopoly of the seed industry has left farmers unable to get non-GM varieties, despite the drought having global repercussions including steep rises of cereal prices and reduced meat production in many countries.

In a commentary circulated by GM Watch (UK), Howard Vlieger, a co-founder and agroecological farming advisor of Verity Farms in drought-stricken South Dakota the US, provides evidence from a farmer who has grown both GM and Verity Farms’ non-GM varieties of soybean and corn side by side [1]. Non-GM soybean, grown in agroecological conditions to promote soil biodiversity and nutritional content is shown next to Monsanto’s GM triple-stack GM corn, which is glyphosate-tolerant and additionally expresses two Bt insecticidal toxins, grown using conventional chemical industrial methods that include the use of Monsanto’s glyphosate-based herbicide, Roundup (Figure 1). As captured in the photograph, non-GM varieties appear greener, fuller, and healthier. These impressions are backed up by the far superior yield reported of non-GM corn, which averaged 100-120 bushels per acre (BPA) compared to the 8-12 BPA to 30-50 BPA of GM corn.

Roundup is gOOd for you. Really. Hey R., I'll buy you and your family the dinner of your choice, wherever you want. All every one of you has to do is drink a glass of the the sweet Roundup stuff first for an appetizer. Just 8 little ounces each and you get a big yummy steak or lobster or whatever you want. Then afterwards for desert you can have a nice bowl of mercury. All on ME!

It's a good deal R. Lots of nutrition. Glyphosates go really well with crow. But I'm sure you know that. You seem to know a really a lot.

Honestly, I'd like to know WHO's lying? Whomever' is profiting would be my guess. But who?

The majority of corn here is grown for ethanol and FEED corn for livestock (it takes more than the energy of two gallons of gas to produce ONE gallon of ethanol. Epic fail in my book)... And don't even TRY to eat feed corn.

The sale of the corn to Mexico was a big deal a little while ago because of our shortage of edible corn here in the states.

It takes THREE times as much water to irrigate GM crops as heirloom, and the states that have been hit with the drought are feeling the loss the most. You've got to remember that when you see "miles" of corn, there's only one, at the most two ears on each stalk. That's not much food per acre, even though it looks like a lot.

Growing up I spent half my life in Chicago and the other half in southern Wisconsin farm country. Farmers used to rotate their fields every year to keep the nutrients in the soil balanced. They can't anymore because of the GM crops. What was a corn field stays a corn field forever. The same for other foods. When I was a kid they built the Kikoman Soy Sauce factory across the fields from our farm (Walworth, Wi). The factory's grown a lot since then and all you see for miles and miles is soy. And it has to stay that way. (And it's causing pest problems driving these little damn asian beetles into all the farm houses by the MILLIONS! They bite, and stink like hell when you squish 'em)

I won't doubt your word on someone's lying (I'm finding tough to believe almost anything anymore). But whoever it is, would be whoever's profiting from (the lies), and I just don't know who that would be, since the majority of corn grown here doesn't end up on our dinner tables.

Re: GM Crops Destroyed by US Drought but non-GM Varieties Flourish
yeah, it is. Basically the soil won't let anything else grow there. The chemicals in the earth kill anything and everything else (besides the new "superweeds" that they're finding out they can't do ANYTHING about now) that tries to grow in that particular field (very simplified explanation).

Roundup is the "little sister" of agent orange. The defoliant used in Viet Nam to kill EVERYTHING it came into contact with and people that were there, and their offspring, are still suffering the effects from today.

Monsanto licenses the farmers to use their seeds, under contract. And that contract stops them from using unused seeds from the year before, no matter how much they have left over. PLUS farmers used to plant part of their fields for seed, and save seeds from good yields to use again. They can't do that anymore either. GM seeds are sterile.

Start doing research on your own, and edit out what you think is from legit sites for yourself, and decide for yourself which are the "kOOk" sites the person was writing about.

India's main staple is rice. Monsanto sold them a bad batch of rice seeds this year that didn't take and they lost almost their entire year's crop. Monsanto is driving all the workers from what used to be an agricultural society into the cities. They need to work and eat. And guess who's jobs they're taking when they get to those cities. Oh, and the farmers beat the crap out of the rep from Monsanto in a field when he went to talk to them. There's so many Indian farmers committing suicide that now when one does, they call it "he's been Monsanto'd". Look it all up and you'll find the ONLY PRO GM people are the reps from Monsanto and DOW.

There's tons more crazy stuff about them. And then look at who's on Monsanto's payroll AND our governments at the same time. The company headquarters is in Missouri and they won't even sell the GM food to their own employee's in their own cafeteria. If you don't believe me, research it all for yourself. Totally whacked. And poisoning the world.
