I've been doing the same test over 3 years. It's only showing maybe 2.5 - 3 degrees off for me. Midwest usa.

It's normal for the north magnetic pole to vary.

There is evidence that the magnetic poles have reversed several times in earths history.

It's not terribly unusual for airports to change runway headings

The evidence suggests that these MAGNETIC pole reversals occur over the span of 100,000 years. They do not happen overnight. Or eeven in your lifetime.

The pole reversal evidence relies on the grain/crystal structure of rocks which solidified during different epochs. Carbon dating pretty much confirms two things:

1: pole reversal has happened
2: it takes about 150,000 years to swap; there is NO evidence that it causes any cataclysm. It just happens; the sun does it too only more frequently.

I don't think aircraft use compasses for navigation, except in an emergency.

They used to use radio navigation where they'd fly from one radio transmitter to another, to another and so on. That was before GPS.

I bet today it's all GPS and I don't think GPS is dependant on the earth magnetic field to function. GPS depends on satellites.

So....a magnetic pole shift might effect bird migration and maybe the mental functioning of those of us who read GLP but not today's airliners.
