One moment while I Karma Pin this thread...

Because seriously -- anyone who says that authors of dystopian literature are in favor of a welfare state is quite clearly someone who has never READ any dystopian literature.

I keep fucking with my fiance asking "who is john galt?" She looked it up and called me gay; telling me to stop talking about the movie Prometheus which I just bought last night... I'm not going to do my own reseach, hoping GLP can tell me what John Galt and Prometheus have in common?

Anyway, it looks interesting for sure.

Re: WHO IS JOHN GALT? Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike
The two greatest commandments upon which all the laws and prophets hang are:

1. Love God with all your heart, mind and soul
2. Love your neighbor as your self.

Ayn Rand wants to do away with these and speaks to the VERY opposite - NO God and NO altruism.

Ayn Rand means "Eye" and "Shield" (Randall is "shield of the wolf")

Just remember - Cain was given a mark after killing his brother and Judas was "doomed to destruction" after selling his "brother" Jesus.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8594088

Nonsense

Don't know if there is a god or not - there is no evidence really.
If there is it is clear it does not involve itself in the day to day affairs of humans.

Can't argue with your #2 though I would reword it to remove the religious aspect to say: treat people like you wish to be treated. Same thing that DOES NOT require the belief in some mythical god that may or may not exist.

Cain / Able is a myth.
There is zero evidence that any such event or persons ever existed except in the minds of the religious zealots who seek to control their fellow man: in other words tyrants.

But I do know that here is no such thing altruism - The reason humans do anything is because it makes them feel better.

[link to www.slate.com]

"The newspapers were filled for months with stories about serial killer called William Hickman, who kidnapped a 12-year-old girl called Marion Parker from her junior high school, raped her, and dismembered her body, which he sent mockingly to the police in pieces. Rand wrote great stretches of praise for him, saying he represented "the amazing picture of a man with no regard whatsoever for all that a society holds sacred, and with a consciousness all his own. A man who really stands alone, in action and in soul. … Other people do not exist for him, and he does not see why they should." She called him "a brilliant, unusual, exceptional boy," shimmering with "immense, explicit egotism." Rand had only one regret: "A strong man can eventually trample society under its feet. That boy [Hickman] was not strong enough.""

Also...

"Rand was broken by the Bolsheviks as a girl, and she never left their bootprint behind. She believed her philosophy was Bolshevism's opposite, when in reality it was its twin. Both she and the Soviets insisted a small revolutionary elite in possession of absolute rationality must seize power and impose its vision on a malleable, imbecilic mass. The only difference was that Lenin thought the parasites to be stomped on were the rich, while Rand thought they were the poor."

Well I don't assume anyone in here considers Slate as anything but liberal propaganda, but still this article contains some interesting information about Rand in general. Besides your faith can't be that strong if you're afraid of even reading an article from a liberal magazine. I dare you. :)

Only the PRODUCERS (not the "useless eaters") can save society, yes.

With almost 50% receiving government assistance in one form or another, if the producers stop producing, those living off the government are up the creek without a paddle.

So, why is it so hard for liberals to understand this? It's basic math. No production = no national wealth = no taxes = no government handouts.

Re: WHO IS JOHN GALT? Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike
"...When Barack Obama let slip his remark in Roanoke—“if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that, somebody else made that happen”—he was advancing his attack on the individual and his exaltation of the collective into a new dimension. Obama voiced a supreme and familiar Marxian contradiction. As any fool knows, the attribution of a creation is to the person who was its creator. Yet in Obama’s words, the visible became invisible. The person who did it didn’t do it, the person was missing in action, the person who painted the canvas didn’t paint the canvas. Instead, the prime mover was the public sector, the collective. The collective created the painting.

This twist is intentional obfuscation. For those whose minds are already weak, in disarray, unformed, the substitution of the collective for the individual is acceptable. It’s, in fact, rather interesting. It has the kick of novelty...."

The amazing part about Atlas Shrugged is that Ayn Rand was a socialist. She wanted to show the futility of capitalism. I think the plan got lost in her heroin soaked brain. The book really shows the distruction caused by socialism. I don't see how it could be viewed as an indictement of capitalism, but that was her plan.

Re: WHO IS JOHN GALT? Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike
Haha Ayn Rand is basically pure evil. Talk about a myopic worldview. Yes, the government does bad things (can you blame a Russian girl for growing up thinking this?). But not everything the government does is bad. Nor does the government have a monopoly on doing bad things. I mean, Monsanto, right? Do I need to say more?

Not to mention, the whole conviction that we live in an amoral universe where all things must selfishly compete with each other for survival, that God is an stupid and evil concept, that we should not even TRY to act altruistically because it goes against our fundamental nature.

She's basically as close to a pure Social Darwinist as exists in this world. Meaning not only would she be against a government program that, say, fed hungry orphans. She would also be personally against it, and would think you were an idiot (and perhaps a bad person) if you gave them some of your breakfast.

Name calling? Now that's intelligent.

I can't even understand what you're trying to say. Producers without money? Huh? Who? And why useless if producing? You must be misunderstanding what I'm saying here.

Those doing the work for the "producers" (the business owners) ARE also the "producers" (the working class).

I'm talking about the lazy-asses who would rather have 18 kids and live off welfare, food stamps and disability than get a friggin' job or CREATE ONE for themselves. Anyone can learn a skill and contribute or even just pound doors and mow lawns. Anyone who has the will and desire can find something to contribute.

If they're of working age and in decent health and not contributing anything, and prefer to just sit their lazy butts on a porch swing all day instead of giving something of themselves back to society, while living off the hard work of others -- those are the "useless eaters" I was referring to and there's little point in providing for them IMO. I say let them get hungry enough to start working for money. Stop enabling them. That's what people do with alcoholics -- they enable their addiction by not letting them hit bottom... and most of those addicted to government handouts are no different than drug addicts or alcoholics IMO.

You wrote... "government handouts as you call them come from the taxpayers not the government fool"

That's exactly what I'm saying. So, what's your point?

From the site linked above...

"The name of this monstrous absurdity is Original Sin. A sin without volition is a slap at morality and an insolent contradiction in terms: that which is outside the possibility of choice is outside the province of morality. If man is evil by birth, he has no will, no power to change it;.."

I can't disagree with this either:

For centuries, the mystics of spirit had existed by running a protection racket - by making life on earth unbearable, then charging you for consolation and relief, by forbidding all the virtues that make existence possible, then riding on the shoulders of your guilt, by declaring production and joy to be sins, then collecting blackmail from the sinners.
Quoting: Ayn Rand, For the New Intellectual

Re: WHO IS JOHN GALT? Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike
This is also a very interesting quote... with which many people on here can agree ... where fundamentalist Christians come in, Faith often is the short-circuit of reason.

....if devotion to truth is the hallmark of morality, then there is no greater, nobler, more heroic form of devotion than the act of a man who assumes the responsibility of thinking.... the alleged short-cut to knowledge, which is faith, is only a short-circuit destroying the mind.
 Quoting: Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

However, I have much faith and I use it as a comfort and a blanket against despair... I do not use it as a crutch to keep me from thinking.

Ayn Rand seems as if she lived an embittered life and it coloured her philosphy of how the universe works.

This doesn't make her evil. It doesn't make her a sociopath. It doesn't make her a villain...

It simply makes her a pessimist, lacking empathy, who speaks plainly and doesn't sugar-coat her opinions.

One can admire a lion as it takes down a gazelle, or a category 5 hurricane as it dessimates a coastline... One can admire a gladiator in the middle of a fight to the death... that doesn't mean you want to be there in the midst of the action, it simply means that you can see elegance, simplicity, and beauty in all of these stark, dark things.

Ayn Rand saw these things, she wrote about them, and she called them out. She herself, was a strange, bitter, brilliant, sharp-edged woman and her foresight will be very important in the days to come.

OH btw...
And if you're going to be a creationist, you have to admit that God created all of these things *also*. Not just butterflies and flowers.

Personally, even as a child, I never understood the hullaballoo between creationists and evolutionists... to me, they were always arguing two sides of the same coin.
