NEW MADRID FAULT is very active. Why anybody is not making more talk about it is beyond me. Look for yourself.

Two distinct places. One in Missouri and one in Arkansas. Both have been shaking for weeks now. Go back several days and see for yourself. New Madrid makes the sinkhole look like childsplay.

LOUISIANA SINKHOLE: COMEDY OF ERRORS OR INTENTIONAL GAMBLE?

I have avoided for a while giving my opinion and the opinion of many others, the light of day concerning how this geological nightmare in Assumption Parish, Louisiana, also known as the “Great Louisiana Sinkhole”, came into being on August 3, 2012..

I can no longer put this off as so many have sent emails asking for my humble opinion and compilation of the events that led up to the present situation. Please take into account this is not just my opinion alone, and that there is a reputable geologist, hydrologist, seismologist, and a salt rock mechanic, (geologist specializing in salt rock formations), that comprise the team that makes this blog possible. All are volunteers, and they are all greatly appreciated. Most are still engaged in their respective fields, and therefore cannot be named at this juncture, for fear of retaliation.

With that firmly stated, and acknowledged, then on with the explanation as we see it.

First we have Hooker Oil Well #1 that was drilled to a depth of 6,200 ft., which is why it was later named 6200 RA SUA , (HookerOilWell1 History). The well was first drilled and completed in 1986 down to the depleted formation shown in the 2007 3-D survey. It was drilled 338 ft. directionally in an southeastern direction for a Bottom Hole Location offset..

It changed hands a few times until Energy Self Service Oils, Baton Rouge, La. took it over in 2006 for Natural Gas, then sometime between then and Feb. 2009, (likely earlier, since its shown depleted in 2007 3D survey by Golden Gate), just up and walked off.

Orphaned without a word to anyone. The state had to come in and P&A the well themselves in 5/12/2010. This shows the actual effectiveness of the Dept. of Conservation, as it took them three (3) years, to figure out this well was orphaned and only because deer hunter’s complained about the oil leaking from the wellhead and rusting tanks left behind. This was an open well, and right next door to the Oxy #3 cavern and at the same depths. The depletion of this formation right next door to Oxy 3 and the salt dome may have had a role to play in all of this due to its proximity just underneath the Oxy #3 Cavern, and I intend to prove just how.

Re: Sinkhole and Gulf Oil Disaster Connection...Also tied to New Madrid fault! Must see video!!
Made this post in another thread, but you guys might enjoy it as well. Probably if you've been following the story you know most of this background, but if not, maybe it will be useful:

I'm not trying to be a shill, or downplay the severity of this thing. It's bad, and it's going to get worse. But, I do have at least a little background that might get you started on your own research if you're interested.

I've been very interested in the geology of the Gulf Coast for many years, and have worked in the oil business in the region, although I don't any more.

First off, you probably know there's lots of oil and gas drilling in Louisiana. The petrochemical industry is big, not only for wells in the gulf, but for wells all over the state.

Second, there are interesting geological formations in Louisiana called 'salt domes'. Underground, large deposits of salt push upward against a layer of 'gumbo' soil, heavy in clay, that is also common in the area. In places, it pushes so strongly that the ground is pushed all the way out of the swamp to form an island, like Avery Island. Note the salt is not exposed directly to the flowing swampy surface water, or it would dissolve and be washed out to sea in time.

Bayou Corne has one of these salt domes, called the Napoleanville Salt Dome.

Third, some interesting things happen with these salt domes. The salt is impermeable, and can form layers like flaky bread with the native 'gumbo' soil, OR with oil and gas. Large natural reservoirs have been found around salt domes, under the earth.

When these are emptied, they are then sometimes used to *store* other oil and gas products. I am not making this up. In fact, this is where the U.S. strategic petroleum reserve is stored. It's not clear if the Napoleanville salt dome is being used by the feds or not. They probably try to keep this info secret.

[link to fossil.energy.gov]

Now, what has happened here is that this company Texas Brine has excavated large pockets of salt from inside the dome, and has then leased out storage space to gas and oil companies to store their products. Then, part of the dome collapsed.

So not only has the land been getting sucked down into the hole AND all the nasty chemicals that were being stored there are coming out and messing up the area, but ALSO the caverns in the dome have now been exposed to fresh surface water, which is dissolving more salt away day by day, exposing new pockets of stored or natural oil or gas, and growing the sinkhole.

So the environment is screwed up, hundreds of people had to leave their land, and the sinkhole is just going to keep growing and growing until it's gone or enough clay-rich gumbo soil settles on top of the remaining salt to prevent any more fresh water from getting to it.

Whew that was long. Sorry if it's too much.

Texas Brine has No Idea how deep the Cavern is now

is that because the salt water is really flowing in from the GoM due to certain drilling operations?

Well I expect what the article was trying to say it that the hole might be shallower now that so much material has fallen down into the hole.

However, I have to point out that salt domes are associated with naturally-occurring pockets of oil and natural gas (and water) that might also have been breached during this process, and there's no telling how deep those go.

AMAZING Aerial Footage of Arkansas Exxon Oil Spill!

This is the aerial video Exxon does not want people to see of the Arkansas tar sands oil spill. Tens of thousands of gallons of oil have flooded some of the streets and yards of Mayflower, Arkansas. The Exxon tar sands oil spill is small taste of what we would see if the Keystone XL Pipeline is approved. The media is largely being kept away from this spill. In the video you can see that Exxon's plan to clean it up consists mostly of hoses and paper towels.

From [link to fossil.energy.gov]

"The Gulf of Mexico was a logical choice for oil storage sites. More than 500 salt domes, known to be an inexpensive and secure means of petroleum storage, are concentrated along the coast. Also, the Gulf Coast is the location of many U.S. refineries and distribution points for tankers, barges and pipelines. In April 1977, the government acquired several existing salt caverns to serve as the first storage sites. Construction of the first surface facilities began in June 1977."

The Pegasus Pipeline that ruptured in Arkansas heads south to Beaumont, TX where there are storage, shipping, and refining nearby. It doesn't go particularly close to Bayou Corne, but there are lots other ways to transport that oil over to Louisiana.

That's a long way of saying 'I don't know', I guess. :)

Also I don't know about the sabotage idea. As the article says, the reserve is spread across lots of salt dome reservoirs, so it's hard to see who would benefit from sabotaging just this one.

Maybe someone who wanted to hurt the company in charge, Texas Brine, I guess.

Judging from the video here and the better one in an above post -- this looks more like water carrying oil and other stuff, and subsiding the land area like Louisiana. Can anyone from that area say if that area was swamp land before or is it indeed subsiding? If so, that is very alarming.

Mayflower, Arkansas is near a lot of water so don't know. But so is Louisiana.

Caution...the show is about gator hunting, a way of life down here for over a century. So many gators down here there is a hunting season for them. They pose a threat to the ecosystem, animals, kids and people in general. Hunting "thins" the herd so to speak.
