Probably just part of an Aquafina water bottle left by our alien relatives.

It looks like a little snip of insulation from around a wire or something. I'm an electrician and I see stuff like that all the time at work, I wire up large transformers for power plants. Even after we vacuum them out and clean them, sometimes little pieces like that go undiscovered.

It won't pose a danger to the rover or its equipment because I don't see any wires in that picture just the plastic coating, if that is what it is. It could also be a piece of plastic from something that isn't even a wire.

A torn piece of one of those little plastic bags in which drugs are traded. Must be done in a hurry. A crow will have brought to their nest. Then from there it's not that far to Mars.

A simple explanation: Space Debris....

we have some trash floating away in space ya know, look at all the missions we've had sending all these crafts into space, mars is the one of the closest planets to Earth, and has gravity too to pull things in....or like another responder to this post said, could be wire insulation which might have come from the craft that is taking the picture??

Looks like the rocks have been sprayed with something..it's all evenly coated..even the sand..

Notice how they appear to be creek pebbles coated with something.

If you look carefully, the plastic has regular longitudinal ridges in it. Spaced so we can see 3-4 of them.

These look 'structural' to me - i.e. they increase the rigidity of the object.

Definitely does not look like something produced via a geological or weather event.. !!!

It probably IS a piece of plastic. Even remote parts of the California desert are not beyond the reach litter... and that's where the "Rover" is doing it's thing.
