Interesting....Did this happen in previous years? And people say there is nothing to 2012? I guess we dont have long to wait to see.

No sirens here, but then there are more goats than people so I guess we don't matter.

According to a couple of blogs I read from greece there hadn't been any tests in years, hence the suspicious timing

It does seem a little odd that they would offer space for so many refugees given their financial predicament

Yeah, bloggers are drama queens, Greek civil defense sirens, happens every year or so. Twas supposed to take place the same day Merkel was in Athens but it was postponed for today, so Merkel and people won't be scared!

even so. seems like the uk is one of those countries where there is nothing like this, nor like the public service drill test broadcast thingies like they have in the US

that blog link in the OP talks about how greeks dont actually DO anything when they hear this. seems like more conditioning. if the authorities actually cared about people being properly drilled and there being proper shelters in use, then i could see the benefit

having a pointless siren go off just for the sake of it when no action is taken seems suspect to me

Yep, never heard something in the UK the 3 years that i lived there, probably a good thing to not have immediate threats/enemies. But it happens here, we live in a delicate region, plus we have an official casus beli declared on us since 1995, things are always a bit tense in this part of the world.

But i think it's more of an exercise for the Greek civil defense, than the whole population, not that i'm sure of it.

really? a regular thing or a one-off? cant think what that might be. mind you, i was out of the country between 86 and 90...

i vaguely recall a lot of late 70s/early 80s (i think) nuclear stuff on tv here

and there was a protect and survive' campaign, all households got a small flyer and there were videos made, theyre on utube but not sure if they were ever actually broadcast

stuff like how to prepare a shelter/what the different sirens mean/info on fallout etc. grim

You get used to it tbh, we've grown up with it and mandatory military service helps us to always have this on our minds, but there is always a hot episode that could escalate in to a conflict every other year.

haha, i wonder how the brits would react to a siren on a regular basis? probably form an orderly queue, lol

yeah, i tend to think of greece as being a holiday destination first and foremost, well, i did up til all the problems

its a national pastime. no excuse for queue jumpers, even with a 4 minute warning. might engage in some tutting and rolling of eyes if the line moves too slowly tho

but i digress!
