The general consensus among economists is that an easing of monetary policy in the forms that you have described offsets the deflationary effect of a recession/depression. (In fact, this was Bernanke's field of expertise before becoming Fed Chair.) Given the fact that Britain chose the "auterity route" instead of monetary easing in 2008/09 and that they are still in a deep recession, perhaps the theory of monetary easing is correct after all. As money is "eased" into the system, growth will pick up. After which, the inflationary pressures can then be addressed. At least, that's what Bernanke says. So far, it has worked. But let's not dismiss the obstacle of the Republican House these past two years. Programs and bills that were meant to further stimulate the economy were blocked -- for no reason other than spite, it seems. Wall Street Reform has occurred in the form of the Dodd/Frank legislation. New trade agreements have been reached. Also, complaints about unfair trade practices have been made. Jobs going overseas has been in practice for at least twenty years. Obama's state of mind: There is no way on earth you can tell what is on his mind from your personal vantage point. Now about plunderin' and collapse and all that: It has already happened. We're just swimmin' in the sludge right now. Hangin' on. Wait for food prices this winter. |
