At the border of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile sits the Altiplano-Puna plateau in the central Andes region, home to the largest active magma body in Earth's continental crust and known for a long history of massive volcanic eruptions.

...a big blob in the middle of the crust, pushing up Earth's surface across an area 100 kilometers (62 miles) wide, while the surrounding area sinks, leading to a unique geological phenomenon in the shape of a Mexican hat that the researchers have described as the "sombrero uplift."

"It's a subtle motion, pushing up little by little every day, but it's this persistence that makes this uplift unusual. Most other magmatic systems that we know about show episodes of inflation and deflation,

and from same article..

Fialko said a similar uplift phenomenon is occurring near Socorro, New Mexico, but at a much lower rate.

This image shows earthquakes over 3.9 Magnitude in the last 30 days.....( so probably lots of smaller ones during the same times period...

Fialko said the sombrero uplift could provide insights into the initial stages of massive magmatic events leading to the formation of large calderas. Such "super-volcano" events erupt thousands of cubic kilometers of magma into the atmosphere and can affect local and global climates. Compared with the Icelandic volcano eruption in 2011 that spewed large amounts of ash into the atmosphere and disrupted global air travel, Fialko said, a super-volcano event would be thousands of times greater.
"Those were truly disaster-type events," said Fialko. "Fortunately such events haven't happened in human history, but we know they did happen in the Altiplano-Puna area in the past."

Thats interesting wording...are they saying they believe this is a supervolcano eruption in the making???

Wow...!!

That is a huge pool of magma...

this is what a daipir looks like...

[link to www.google.co.nz (secure)]

So an earthquake that allows further magma to intrude in to the underlying pool could easily set this off, as would likely cause further upward pressure...another place on earth getting set to go off like a firecracker.....!!

WOnder why the Germans would have a base there....

This isn't new.

It has been there for thousands of years.

I have no doubt that in ancient times that area has exploded via massive super volcano.

There is no current threat that it will explode anytime soon however.

If this volcano went off- it could well be a supervolcano and its no difference from any other supervolcano in the world ...except for one difference. This one has had continued dome uplift unlike the others which seem to inflate and deflate like breathing....this one just keeps on inflating....in an area known to be very active in the past......very distant past....so is probably building up for the next big blow...it may only takes a decent sized earthquake to set if off.....

Have you noticed how the researchers commented that this could give them valuable details on what happens in the lead up to the eruption of a supervolcano...

clearly this implies that this is what they believe this is in the process of preparing for...

And since they have never been able to study a supervolcano eruption in modern history its new territory ....so nobody really knows how a supereruption will start...obviously if there is enough pressure to blow away miles of dirt/rock etc there must be a huge amount of pressure involved....

I suspect when the pressure becomes too much for the ground to contain that the dome will enlarge suddenly and explode....this could happen REALLY fast....

i think it is clear that mankind needs to find a way of manufacturing food ARTIFICIALLY and fucking fast!

growing it will soon become impossible, for a period of decades to centuries, and if we want to survive, scientists need to get going on inventing artificial food.

yes, i know, yuk, but it's mankind's only hope really! even the BEST hoarders cannot survive one of these eruptions imho.

...you are right on the money there...only so much science can do and they certainly cant reverse the current cycle the planet is in.....
things will be totally different from our reality today when one of these supervolcanoes lets rip in to the atmosphere....so yes would be a good idea if they actually started preparing for it...long term.

big changes coming.

[link to www.youtube.com]

that is ONLY 100 million years from now. yes, i know, that a LOOONG, time, but it isn't really, is it? in the history of the planet, it's mere moments away. it has to start sometime, maybe it starts now?

look for example at Australia, new zealand and Iceland

[link to img9.imageshack.us]

where are they? you can see that Australia has ploughed into Asia and has pushed up immense mountain ranges, new zealand is nowhere to be seen, and Iceland has been pulled south, and is a much smaller island.

where are we seeing the most activity at the moment? north of australia, new zeland and iceland?

btw, look at Louisiana on that map. wink
