Congrats to those that have quit, courage to those who are and get going to those on the fence. I am 6 days short of one year smoke free.

I just remember back to how it was. The smell, the cost, the planning my life around a next fix, missing what was important and what I would never get back. Meanwhile, I was always craving the next cigarette more when I smoked than when I quit, I was in constant withdrawal smoking.

I held onto having just one would leave me wishing I was where I am today. I thought of all the times I wished I was and hoped to be the one not smoking as others hovered outside, losing good times and memories they would never catch again.

I also had educated myself a bit on the nicotine addiction, it made all the difference. I would think on how the fat cat tobacco industry and all those addicted to their tax money were sitting in expensive suits, in expensive places, planning and plotting how to keep me addicted and add more, to keep them filty....rich.

Best to all. It is not difficult once you adjust the tuning, it is nothing to lose, all to gain. Then you need to reprogram the mind to function without it, that is the hardest, but as you live each day without smoking, the triggers float away too.

Never a dull moment, Salt.

First, great congratulations on the new family member to come. I hear you on the timing and college, but maybe that miracle couldn't wait. Cosmos is shaking anticipating new life and I'm so happy matriarch Salt will be there providing love and guidance. Best to all your family.

Second, so proud of you for reaching for the mint instead of the stick. That your desire for smoke was so strong some poor bastard had to lose his townhome (request wires sometimes get crossed) for your smoke to manifest itself shows a real team effort (seriously, hope all are well) and I'm grateful you chose not to put stick to mouth.

I'd ask you to put-out a desire for someone in the Bronx to get a shitload of dough, but I'd probably get some little fat bastard from Pillsbury showing-up at my door.

In any event, all good things to you, sister.

AC 739 - Great Congratulations on your continued victory.

Six days short of a year. Wow. A huge, huge, milestone. 7/14/13 ONE YEAR for you.

Amazing.

Everything you wrote of has been my experience and you expressed it far better than I could of. Same thought process of the fat cats, the poisons, the lost time. A theif I invited in and then became a hostage to. So good to be free. Thanks so much for writing of it all so clearly.

I'm marking my calendar the 14th and will send-out my highest wishes and congratulations to you on your great accomplishment. Again, continued great things to you thanks for your insightful post.

this was one building perpendicular to ours

exciting night

got to sleep around 3am

:aptfire:

interestingly enough, our sister complex one mile up the road had a similar fire may 24th. a tenant from that fire moved over here and now the building goes up in flames.

strangely coincidental, eh?

hehe just kidding.

And i'm doing well... I don't know how many days even. That might be a good sign?

Hey all. Is everyone in fine form? I'm in and out so don't be insulted if I don't respond. Not smoking is real nice when its so humid as it is here. Was real hard to breathe before.

Find a copy of Allan Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking online and read it.

Cold turkey is really the best way to stop smoking but to do it you need to understand how the addiction works first so you can get past the cravings and mind games you play with yourself.

I've been over 6 months now with out a smoke after 25 years of chain smoking. I'm not saying it is easy and I still get the occasional craving now still but I understand why I get them and how to ignore them till they pass.

Personally I use my underlying hatred for the big tobacco companies as motivation to not smoke but financial and health reasons are equally valid.

Good luck there is plenty of support here to help you.

Smoked for years and years and it was having bad effects on my breathing so trying to quit. Took Chantix for nine days, then said to hell with meds, and going it alone. Haven,t had a Marlboro for over two weeks, how -ever I do get the urge several times a day, but the urge is getting farther apart and easier to get past. Wish me luck. Maybe this can become, "SMOKERS ANONYMOUS" thread. Update, after almost three months I am still smoke free. Yes I still have the occasional urge but it goes away quickly. Proud so many have reported quitting in the many pages of this thread. Please check the following link, it is a great asset to quitting. DF [link to media.wix.com]

Haven't had a cigarette since 7/6 at 6:15am. Why the precise time ? That's because I was carted off in an ambulance from a damn heart attack! 2.5 pack a day and today makes day 5 and I must say fighting the urges today

lightsplease - glad you made it past the heart attack. Big congratulations on Day Five.

I hear you on the urges, but they really do pass. You've been given a jarring reminder of your quit time and date. A new beginning for you now. Whatever you do, ride-out that urge to smoke as it will become smaller with the passing of time. Keep checking-in here as there are many among us who will gladly walk with you through the new arch of freedom from the toxic sticks.

Again, great congratulations on Day Five. The physical part of the kick is past and now it's all in the head. You can do this.

So happy to hear that, Gumps. Great congraulations on your smoke-free status.

Never thought about the season, but you're right. I bet the summer is as difficult a time for some to quit the smokes as it is for some hoping to kick the booze. Fall (the back to school conditioning) and January (with all other resolutions) are probably peak times for the quit.

Things are ok on this end. Crossed the seven month mark on July 3 (ya-fucking-hooey) and plugging along. Spent some time at the shore and had some cravings, but I rode them out knowing they would pass. That said, my wife has this notion we should move to Jersey and get a place close to the ocean. Unlike the times she's brought this up in the past, I'm not certain it's a passing thing. We looked at a few places, but the thought of leaving NYC is jarring to me. I'll take the actions (happy wife, happy life and all that) and take it a day at a time. I certainly won't smoke over it.

Other than that, all is well, Grumps. Kids are home/off from school and the days, despite being brutually hot these last few weeks, have all held promise and good things.

So happy to hear from you, Grumps, even more so because you're smoke-free. You're a hardcase like me and that makes your victory even more of a treasure. Please don't be a stranger because you truly are missed when gone.

Best to you, sister.

No sun here today and the weather outside is gloomy. Holding a cup of coffee and the soft lights inside my home comfort against the darkness outside.

These are the times I want a smoke. To take my leisure and recline with my coffee doing nothing. Thinking nothing. Just the sound of cup and the burning embers of toxic sticks.

Of course, I have no smokes here and my laziness - getting dressed, walking to the corner bodega, small talk with the clerk - outweighs my desire for a smoke.
Even still, I had to get the thought of a smoke outside of my head and onto to something else.

It's a cunning and baffling affliction our addiction and for today I will not be it's slave.

Hi BxMac

I grew up on the ocean so I always think you can do no wrong to raise children by the ocean... and retirement by the ocean is a real treat I imagine. I dream about retiring near it. The nights are a lullaby with the sound of the waves and the days walking along shore are always surprising. I am not a city person though and imagine if you like hustle and bustle it would seem like a prison sentence to be left standing there by the great vastness of a sea.

I want cigarettes every day. Every day. But now that the major addiction withdrawal part is over I have more rational thought and can do battle. Why would we smoke? it's just not rational. Always there though eh?

I always say "Choose wisely." That's my mantra.

Everyone: You can do it.

:)
