Just wanted to offer a big CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!! to all the quitters on here.

I will be joining you shortly and will re-visit this thread. My quit date got extended due to a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder. Cannot deal with the pain and meds and sitting without a smoke. Heping to reset the quit date for a couple of weeks out, as the pain gets under control.

Smoked for years and years and it was having bad effects on my breathing so trying to quit. Took Chantix for nine days, then said to hell with meds, and going it alone. Haven,t had a Marlboro for over two weeks, how -ever I do get the urge several times a day, but the urge is getting farther apart and easier to get past. Wish me luck. Maybe this can become, "SMOKERS ANONYMOUS" thread.

Good for you!

Same here...smoked for 17 years...at least a pack a day and then felt pain in the chest/lungs. I stopped, realizing that smoking was so foolish. I look at smokers now and wonder why I did it. If I can do it, you can!

Good luck, I am not going to tell you it is easy. If you have smoked for a long time, and enjoyed as much as I did, It is hard. I am really having trouble keeping my mind off of them. The only thing that seems to work is food, and I don't want to gain weight. I am already starting to bet some belly fat I don't want. Hope you don't have the food cravings like I am having. Good luck.

on average a person only gains about 20 lbs when they quit smoking and believe me its much easier to lose 20 lbs than a lung.So go ahead and plan to eat more.Choose healthy foods and snacks while quitting and take your vitamins. Also try switching to tea if it helps

I "quit" it just like I quit going to movie theaters. I still go but I don't feel the need to go there all the time.
Strong will? High metabolism or something?
I don't know.
All I know is if I go out I can smoke a whole pack in 1 night and the next day wont even think about it.

Same with booze. Just like smoking I started at around age 14/15, can drink loads in 1 day, maybe repeat the next week and able to not even think about it for quite a while.

Some people also like icecream and stuff like that, eat/drink whatever from time to time and don't even think about it for quite a while, but its good stuff that we enjoy occasionally.
If it happens it happens, just don't think of it as an addiction and you will be ok.

Even studies shows that 1 smoke a day is good for the body. Everything in moderation is not bad.
Like water, the simple H2O if consumed in big quantities in a small period of time can be a bad thing.

Desert - this post is like a shot in the arm.

My kids are begging me to quit. Quit for 8 yrs. and went back (what an asshole I was) and now I really must. Am afraid my health is going, and will go down the shitter if I don't.

There should be some sort of permanent post for those of us who are trying to quit

Your post has given me the courage to quit again.

And, you are absolutely right - it is the most addictive drug going.

After 8 yrs, one cig had me going again.

Will start tomorrow a.m.

That means: no more morning coffee, alcohol, and a few other things.

After meals is a big one for me too.

I don't know how I'll drive w/o smoking! Used it as an excuse to stay awake.

I admire you man.

Keep up the amazing work!!!

It's easy to quit if you can't breath. You really won't feel like smoking, I promise.... You smoke long enough you will be bed ridden and on oxygen with chronic bronchitis/emphysema. That's reason enough right there to quit smoking immediately.

I quit smoking 2 packs of Camel filters a day cold turkey without the patch or meds.

It can be done. All you have to do is hate the smokes. Hate them for enslaving you and killing you. Hate the government for mugging helpless addicts at the cash register.

The trick to succeeding is drug substitution. Drink a lot of really good coffee, and eat what you want to make up for the nicotine. The cravings will fade to almost nothing within six months.

SP

PS: Also avoid bars for the first 6 months. You are at your weakest when drinking around smokers.

Re: I QUIT SMOKING , YOU CAN TOO. I QUIT SEPT 27, 2012, SUPPORT EACH OTHER HERE
I quit smoking about four years ago, and then went about two years without having one. Now I'll have a few when I go out to drink, but that's it.

They completely disgust me when I am sober, so I am not worried about becoming full time again. I have a few more years of hard partying left in me, but I am 100% confident that when those days are over, so will my smoking by 100%.

Here is my advice though. Don't drink, at least not for a few months. Once you drink, you don't give a shit about anything, and will power goes out the window. If you hang out with friends regularly that all smoke, then you're fucked as well. These two things were the deal breakers for me. I late moved to a new state, had no friends, and didn't go out drinking. Then I got mono for a month, and went smokeless. After that I decided to just give up. Those things all came together and helped me, because I honestly don't think I could have quit otherwise.

Any recommendations on which e-cig or vapor cig is the best? I tried them a few years ago and wasn't impressed. Maybe they have improve since then?
 Quoting: CrossBone

Some where way back in first pages recommended some. I never used one.
 Quoting: Desert Fox

My Mom has been trying to quit too, she has been smoking for over 50 years! I'm so proud of her. She still smokes, but doesn't inhale. To me it seems pointless, but at least she is taking a step!! She has been doing that for a few months now.
For Christmas I am going to buy her a e-cig, but not sure what one. So I will look through the posts and find some. :D
Last night I downloaded subliminal "quit smoking" music. Who knows if it actually works, but why not take a chance, right?
Honestly, this thread is a huge help. Thank you, Desert Fox.
