Be a tobacco snob. It's great!

One of the lessons that really stuck with me from The Easy Way to Quit Smoking was that we need to know that the smoker envies us... that we don't need to light up the way he or she does. And it's so true I think. I hated that I was a slave to anyone, let alone rich assholes from Philip Morris. Own it!

CHL 11. Two Digits twice. Nice reply to the co-worker (until I was ready to quit, I had no concept of what stopping meant to anyone else - a literal blind spot of insanity tied to my own self-centered nic addiction). We'd be better off sticking a needle in our eye than taking a smoke at this point. Congratualtions.

EIGHT DAYS a week!

Is tomorrow Beethoven's Ninth?

Really having a tough time today... It's that morning coffee... God I love my coffee... Ain't no way I'm giving up my coffee just because it makes me crave that other thing...

BxMac, you're a poet who knowit! :)

CHL... I was wondering what I was going to say to people who offer me a cigarette... now I know... "Go choke yourself!" Nothing like truth! :)

Desert... you are rock! So amazingly supportive. :)

One more day dammit. Just one more day and then maybe another day.

Are there words to Beethoven's ninth?

Grumpy - Damn, you're an early riser. Sorry for the rough start to the day, but you now have over a week's worth of references to know that the day will get better. Coffee. Not giving it up. Don't want the headache (pun intended).

I've been really trying to eat healthy since putting the smokes down (a pretty new thing for me as I'm Donkey Irish through and through and meat, potatoes, and green "pays" has been the height of culinary health over the years). For the last two weeks, I've been making fresh juice, slicing vegtables for soups. and limiting my snacks to things like raw almonds, cashews, and the occasionally pretzel stick binge. I've become a real puss.

Last night, I had a huge foolish fight with my wife over putting-up the Christmas Tree (we've always put our fresh Christmas Trees up on Christmas Eve - a tradition my parents, and theirs before them, have held to for generations - which, truth be told, is how far back you'd have to go to find anyone playing with a full deck in my family). At the urging of my wife and children, I was cajoled into going out and bringing back this year's fresh tree. The childish resentment I felt was unbelieveable. To make a long story longer, the tree was put-up (petulantly, I had nothing to do with it other than bringing it home and placing it in the stand) and my wife and kids had a wonderful time decorating it while listening to music and eating popcorn. I sat in another room and prowled GLP like a simmering teenager feeling the world was unfair. A real fucking baby.
After everyone went to sleep, I fell into a pint of Haagen Dazs (chocolate to be specific to which I added mounds of m&ms) and scooped bite after delicious bite into my pouting, resentful, mouth. It was sublime and let me know that this nicotine addiction will try to land anywhere it can in my life. The sugar buzz was wonderful and my mood greatly improved (even the tree looked fucking great and I could, grudgingly, see the point of having the pleasure of seeing the lights twinkle a little earlier in our home). As I write this morning, I have a great urge to go pick-up some scones, clotted cream, and rasberry jam for breakfast. The floodgates are open and the beast is on the prowl. Of course, I'll simply eat something practical and healthy because to do otherwise would be like switching seats on the Titantic and within weeks I'd be looking like John Candy.

So you can bet your ass I'm drinking coffee right along with you this morning, Grumpy. Tender mercies where we can get them.

Thanks for the forum to ramble.

And yes, I believe there are words to the 9th, but more appropriately to our quest, there are hints of "Ode to Joy" throughout.

Best to all.

You are on track friend. I actually skipped coffee a few days because of the association to smoking, but only had to do that for maybe 3 or 4 mornings. Tomorrow will be number 9 for you, and in a few days you will lose track of the days as I have, but my quit date will never be forgotten. hf

Licorice. That's the answer.

Did you know that the largest user of licorice flavoring is the tobacco companies. I never could figure out why I craved black licorice every time I ever quit smoking in the past. Now I have my licorice allsorts handy. Oh hell I know they're not good for you but they do the trick... I don't dare go and buy ice cream or the likes. The monster still lurks with its appetites and fury. It wants what it wants when it wants it and so i give it licorice...

I know all about the resentful baby routine BxMac. It's my favorite "go to" role when all else fails and when quitting smoking virtually all else fails... lol..

:)
Yes Desert, there is tomorrow and one day I'll forget to count I expect. I didn't make a note of the day I quit but if today is Day 8 then it was 10 December 12. Mind you, I've got a bad memory at the best of times.

These cravings are hell. Funny how they just show up suddenly. I try to tell myself they are over in 3 minutes. They aren't though. Takes maybe six sometimes... :)

I can breathe though. It's amazing how quickly it clears.

Hi ex smokers glpers.
Im on day 2, and looking for some help I found and read the whole thread.
Ive been smoking for 15 years (1 pack) and latelly 1 1/2 to 2 a day, and you all know, this means miserable mornings.
I quited 2 years ago for 3 month ( yes Im THAT stupid)and during an extremely stupid argument with now my ex wife, I started again.....now I feel without her help I ll be able to do it.

One thing that I didnt find in the posts, are the headaches, nasal congestion, heart palpitations and other shit that makes you want to shoot yourselves.

Most of the posts are about the cravings, which of course I have, but are nothing compared to the other aches.

Am I the only one?
I feel ( like my last time) fisically ill, does this mean Im too addicted?

Thank for this thread, I use your posts as if they where addressed to me.

I hope I can get some sleep tonight, I only sleept 2 hr last night

And thanks again to the legendary Desert Fox who got this whole ball rolling... you get another buziclap because you're awesome and so is it...

Today I watched the same dude who offered me a smoke yesterday choke himself and didn't like the smell but at the same time I didn't hate it either.... My resolve and willpower remained completely intact and acted as a shield against the evil weed....lol

I felt kinda like The professor that actor Russel Crowe played in the movie "A Beautiful Mind" in that I know and acknowledge my addiction and I simply choose to ignore it.

Anon 132 - Congratulations of Day 2. That's really big stuff. If you're here at this thread, you want to do it and you will.

Yeah, the physical stuff is unpleasant and it really does suck. I think it's just our bodies getting rid of all the poison (in addition to the nicotine) that's in the smokes. Try and tell yourself that the worse you feel the more efficient your body is working to cleanse itself of the toxins. If you can, try to drink a lot of water (and cranberry juice) to flush the stuff out of you. The lack of sleep makes everything look bad and, accompanied with the anxiety/palpatations, etc, it's what fuels the lie that a smoke will bring relief in the first 72 hours. Of course, that's just a lie and the only thing a smoke will do is bring you right back to the shit and You Don't Have To Do That Anymore.

I promise, if you don't pick-up a smoke, all of this will pass. It's an absolute promise. All of this will pass and soon you'll be walking through the arch of freedom and the beginning of your new smoke-free life. You can do this.

Stay close and let us know how you're doing. Very glad you're here.

Big Congratulations on your 4-5 months. Smoke Free (and peace in the Middleast at home for you)! Great stuff.

Wish me luck. Maybe this can become, "SMOKERS ANONYMOUS" thread.
 Quoting: Desert Fox

Good luck in tackling this non addictive drug, you just showed it can be done without the world quitting with you.

How about we let this be you stop smoking thread.

I know lots of x smokers and they all bitch about others still smoking. I consider them to be the same as a dry drunk, everybody should also quit. I can sit beside a smoker and the smell is there for one whiff and then it's gone and there is no 'torment' for me, but then I consider that I'm over it rather than keeping it at bay.

Day 11 for me. Allen Carr's book is awesome. I have smoked for years and tried to quit numerous times. Chantix was not good, weird side effects! Like anything else, it's a mind set, if you TRULY want to quit you can. After three days the physical withdrawal is over, the rest is all just mental. I am no longer a slave!!!

All of those bad effects hit me as well and they are horrendous. All the while my body craves a smoke and tells me the feelings will go away if only I have a smoke. I suffered the empty hungry feeling and the demon says a smoke will fix that. I can only promise you that the cravings will get easier, farther apart and each one conquered will make you stronger. You are in the midst of the worst of it, stay busy, drink cranberry juice, ect., but don't give in. My personal best wishes go to you, and know I do and have felt your pain. hf DF

Takes maybe 2 weeks, at least it did me, before effects of quitting eased up to the point it was not a constant issue. Stay hydrated, eat well, walk, keep mind busy as possible, ect. You are at the hump point, don't turn back. You can already tell how much better you breath and how the air taste better, smell is returning, taste buds waking up, on and on, don't give up, The battle is worth it, you'll see. DF
