who knew we could do it!!!

but we are...

must be the right combination of people on here you think?

Perhaps there are others who like myself, in the beginning said nothing, and gained much by just reading the hope and compassion everyone shared.

I keep coming back to read of others achievements, ups and downs, and glean a lot of hope and encouragement from the way we interact with each other... It is rare to find complete strangers interacting with each other with so much respect and grace.

The vibe of who we are and what we are accomplishing individually and collectively is powerful... even when I do not post, I continue to feel very much a part of the wave of love, courage and strength by not harming myself by smoking...just for today.

19 days blessed.

Afternoon, Good and Trusted Friends -

Good to hear you're feeling better, CHL (other than the pain in the neck). No judgements on how we feel emotionally (thank God how I feel on any given day isn't who I truly am....just passing parts of the whole). That said, glad all is well, brother.

Grumps is keeping on in smooth fashion. OneLove is spreading the good, good vibes. Salt is a day from 20.

Jasper's got fresh painted walls (love the soothing act of painting walls -puts me in a nice zone and allows the fruits of labor to be seen immediately) and another day clean.

DangerW keeps moving forward and each day racks-up more clean time before Carnival.

Pulling for the Fox as he's close to four months and after Tuesday he'll be back to full fighting shape.

RicRoc and Gratia, elder statesmen who check-in from time to time.

We've got Cat and Panama Red stopping-in and, recently, Don'tBeAfraid. Riggs comes back as well.

Then there's the anonymous posters who bop-in and give their day counts or anniversary dates. Some stay and we're allowed the priviledge of getting to know them and walk by their side. Some move on with our hope they hold to the quiet voice that brought them here with a desire to quit the toxic stick.

Just as we lumbered into this thread, more will come. And, like DesFox before us, we'll be there to welcome and support them. We now have an obligation to give unconditional support to the next person seeking freedom from the smokes. An almost sacred trust. It was freely given to us and we now have a responsibility to return the gift in kind. It's good and clean and pure and in the giving of ourselves we get back a thousand-fold.

I thank all of you (reading or not) for getting and keeping me smoke-free. I could not have done it (yesterday, today, and, God willing, tomorrow) without all of you.

Just checking in to say I did go to a party last night and drank some wine but no fear, the nicotine mints saved the day (night). Its cold outside so my other half is reluctant to go for a smoke on her own.

I am encouraging her now and hope that the dreaded weed will soon vanish from the familier smokes drawer.

You too, Danger!

Oddballs, good to see you back here. Congratulations on navigating the party and wine smoke-free last night. Big accomplishment and another milestone. If it's a choice between the mints and a cigarette, I'll take the mints (although, as you mentioned some days back, I imagine they do get a little pricy after a time).

Nice news about the cold keeping your wife from the smokes. She'll put them down when she's ready. For you, it's probably the old "I can show you better than I can tell you" that will make the difference. She now has a daily example of how it's done (our friend here, CHL, was an example to his wife and now she's smoke-free) by seeing you without the weed. We all, it is hoped, get our shot for freedom and your wife will get hers. Sounds like she's got a good friend in you.

In any event, it's good to see you again and thanks for checking-in. Please keep us posted.

CHL, how is the lung/congestion thing going? I ask, because I just swilled some Bragg's Apple Cider Vineger (only about $4 a bottle here) with water and seems to be helping me and I thought of you. I've also been squeezing fresh lemons into water and adding cayene pepper. I could be duping myself (wouldn't be the first time), but it seems to be breaking-up the cough and all the attendant stuff.
Might be something to consider if you still have it (there's a wealth of information on GLP about the vineger and pepper etc.).

Have to run. Going to Jersey (if there's a bridge to hell it's the George Washington) and getting the troops together here on a Sunday morning is like mustering the dead. As always, we're late.

Best to all and let me know what you think, CHL.

Strangely enough, it was gone all day yesterday but seems to be back today.....

Don't really have any thoughts on the matter except that I prolly need to get to the doctor and get a stress test going or something. Like I said earlier though, it doesn't seem to affect my capacity and it's not like I'm wheezing or anything....

Thanks for thinking of me :)

20 days is a big day Danger! Amazing you!

I have a crazy thought... Just thinking about tobacco being one of the "nightshade" vegetable things... Eggplant, tomatoes, tobacco. They are all pro-inflammatory things. Wondered if when we eat an eggplant if we start to crave tobacco... Could happen...

Just a stray silly thought...

Spacecadet! Great to see you here and knowing that you have actually gone through those rough 2 weeks already! You're strong! Smoking is for losers. But we didn't even know we were losers. I smoked 30 years. You smoked 40 years. I can tell you after 40 days of not smoking there is nothing that feels better than success at this one thing. Oh hell, I'm not perfect in anything by any means but in this one thing... one thing I'm doing it right.

We are the champions my friend. And we'll keep on fighting til the end...

or something like that.

Drink lots and lots of water. I mean less than a gallon a day, but approaching it. Unless you have issues with electrolyte balance (classic potassium issues with kidneys), then more water will help your body expel the accumulated soot, thin the mucus, help heal (because a ton of people are really chronically dehydrated). Do you have back pain? Probably dehydrated. Do you have headaches? Same thing.

A weight lifter to get "cut" up will drink a ton of water. Actually soldiers do very well when fully hydrated. Their bodies are working at peak capacity, but yes "pissing like a Russian Racehorse" which is an irritation. (Waiting for a witty pissing gorilla Alpha male seeking comfort sex comment)

You want to flush out the soot, but not trap it in your liver and kidneys, and that's happening right now to all of you. Those other organs are dealing with a massive toxic waste dump. Try taking some milk thistle to help them cope with it.
[link to www.wisegeek.com]

The dust cells in your lungs expel the soot in your mucus. You swallow it. It goes to the stomach, passes into the blood, then filtered by the liver, and eventually works it's way to the kidneys. Both eliminate the toxic soot that accumulated.
[link to www.quitsmokingsupport.com]
"When smoke is inhaled, nicotine is carried deep into the lungs where it is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and carried to the heart, brain, liver, and spleen. Nicotine affects many parts of the body, including the heart and blood vessels, the hormonal system, body metabolism, and the brain. Nicotine is found in breast milk and in cervix mucous secretions. Nicotine freely crosses the placenta and has been found in amniotic fluid and the umbilical cord blood of newborn infants. Nicotine is metabolized by the liver, lungs and a small amount is excreted by the kidneys. Nicotine is broken down into cotinine and nicotine-N'-oxide.

Although several different factors influence the rate of metabolism and excretion, measurements of nicotine or its metabolites will vary depending on the fluid being measured (blood, urine, or saliva). In general, a regular smoker will have nicotine or its metabolite (cotinine) present in the body for about 3 to 4 days.

In studies measuring nicotine levels in urine, 72 hour urine collections yielded greater than 90% of cotinine in most subjects."

It's being pissed out.

Good information DBA. And no, my anticipating friend, no comments coming regarding your "Russian Racehorse" reference, popka.

Modesty, respect for the gentler sex here, and decorum dictate I refrain from highlighting any physical characteristic I may proudly share with the aforementioned creature.

I have, however, been called a horse's ass on more than one occasion.

Water it is.
