Marsute - Fantastic. Day Four! You said you were going to do it in your first post and you're really doing it. So admirable. Much respect.

I too did not believe I could ever quit smoking. Thought I would be a slave forever. Well, here we are. Clean and Serene. Doing it.

You have much to be proud of. Great Congratulations on Day Four!

Ah, Hawk. Day 18. Just marching forward. So happy for you and thanks for all you do on this thread. It's remarkable that by extending ourselves to our fellow travellers we get the gift of being non-smokers. Miracles and wonders in that.

I'm glad you're here and smoke-free, Hawk, Congratulations on 18.

Keep on keeping on.

Grumps! Grumpy! Received the instagram photo you sent.

I'm not an expert on Russian criminal tattoos, but I believe the dagger through the neck indicates the wearer committed a murder while in prison and is available for hire for another. The 'Theives Stars' tattooed on the knees represents the person 'will never kneel before the police' and the bells tattooed on the feet show the person with the served the entire lenght of their prison sentence 'to the bell' or end.

Wow, that girl Tatyanna must be one tough cookie.

Sorry to hear about your car. It's no wonder you're having the occasional urge for a smoke. Have you heard anything from the police? From Yuri? With his recently shaved head and those red Doc Martin's, he shouldn't be too hard to spot. Who knew the student foreign exchange program would be so dicey (at least your heart was in the right place). Please keep me posted.

And yes, I do think it was a good idea to change your locks, buy the dobberman attack dog, and hire the Hell's Angels for round the clock security (and I hear you, and agree, on the harleys, those mothers make some noise).

In any event, I'm glad you're smoke-free. Anyone would have a desire now and again given your recent troubles. Don't be hard on yourself. Hang tough!

Remember, even if your ass falls off, don't smoke!

As always, great to hear from you, Grumps. Keep me posted.

Grumps - Thanks for the update. I can't believe Tatyanna is on her way to Canada. Isn't she eight months pregnant? Is it safe for her to travel? It has to be a 12 to 15 hour flight. Well, if her tats are any indication, if anyone can tough out that grueling flight pregnant it would be her. I'm just glad I'm not in the aisle seat next to her if the baby's pushing on her bladder.

And you're certain you believed her when she said she completed a correspondence course in Russia and is now an ordained minister? Do you really believe the woman in the photo has turned over a new leaf?

That's one hell of a toss from the horse on the road to Damascus.

Wow. I keep repeating 'Wow" as you update me with the latest events.

Keep me posted. Glad you got rid of the flower pots (cleaning them out for use as water pots should you have to deliver Tatyanna's baby at home is a good idea and shows you're using the old noggin, Grumps) and your determination to remain smoke-free is strong.

And, yes, the crumpled page torn from a biography of Trotsky with the word, "Help' written in black marker might be a message from Yuri. A bigger concern; that you found it on your back porch means someone got by the Dobberman and the Hells Angels. That's a problem (but not one to smoke over).
So, yes, it could be from Yuri, or someone who knows him. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Hang tough, Grumps.

Spacecadet - I remember your first post here. It stuck with me because you said you had smoked for 40 years. Same with me. It gave me comfort to know someone with that amount of time smoking was going to give it a go as well.

And here you are.

A Month Tomorrow! Holy Mackeral! One month! 30 Days!

Great, Great, Congratulations, Space!

What a remarkable milstone. Very happy for you. I hope you're bursting with pride and delight on your accomplishment.

I also remember you saying something about being a 'loser' as a smoker. That struck me as well. They got a name for the smoke-free winners in the world and for today, and tomorrow, and the 29 days preceeding, that name is Spacecadet.

A winner. A force of nature. A Free person from the toxic sticks of chemicals.

One Month. Such a big milestone. Congratulations. Very, very happy for you.

i had to stop playing music for a few years (this was like 18 yrs ago) because my musician friends and i would drink too much every time we got together.

i can tell you that it is possible to stop drinking, even for years at a stretch, if you want to. it's just like smoking, but easier to stop in my opinion. now, if i want a beer or two once in a while, i can have it, but the funny thing is i don't like it like i used to. i have no interest in getting buzzed anymore and when i start to feel it, i am happy to stop.

but, in order for me to get to this place, i had to stop drinking completely for many years.

if you don't want to drink, just don't. it might seem like a temptation at first, but if you make your mind up, you will be very glad for your ability to exercise self control and it will build up your ability.

Grumps, Good Morning - Great to hear from you.

That's quite a breakfast you put together for the Hell's Angels this morning. Pancakes and eggs for 17! Yikes. Glad to hear two of the fellas' lingered after your bountiful feast to help with the dishes. That's a lot of syrup stuck to the plate.

Good luck with the Tatyanna airport pick-up this afternoon. Between the tats and her baby bump, she shouldn't be too hard to miss at arrivals. Regarding what to do with her on her first day in the West, I really don't know. Bowling? Maybe you could take her bowling? She might be wiped after the flight, but she just may need to move around a bit (nothing too strenuous given her pregnancy) after sitting for so long. So, yeah, maybe bowling.

Sounds like you put much thought and effort into setting-up her room. Very generous of you and I'm certain she's going to love her new digs (and, let's face it, you could place her in a broom closet and it would be more spacious then what's she's probably accustomed to). The pictures of Johnny Cash, the Kremlin, and Jimmy Swaggart are a nice touch. Kind of like a before and after of her life. Clearly, you put thought into the decor. Tastefully appointed as always, Grumps.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Have fun at the Strike Zone and remember to keep your elbow in as you release the ball.

Eyes on the prize. Keep me posted and all best, sister.

Hey, Hawk. Sounds like a good night ahead with your friends coming in to visit.

19 Days for you so you have a bit of a buffer between you and the last smoke.
I guess it comes down to weighing what you've been doing for yourself against a weekend. If you can drink without the call of the smokes, have at it. If you don't want to drink, you don't have to and the wild card of wanting a smoke with a drink is eliminated. Either way, you'll do the right thing for you.

You worked hard and you're feeling good since your smoke and booze free trip. From the gym, to the people at the deli saying they notice a bounce in your step, you've been doing it. You're living your life the way you want to. It's all good.

Great time with your pals tonight.

Giant - Day Nine and dismissing that can last night must have felt good.

It feels like a victory when we walk-away. Since I quit, whenever I drive to Jersey I automatically look at the cigarette prices at the gas stations I pass. I used to drive over the bridge to Jersey because the smokes there are cheaper. Now, I still look, but it feels great not to have to stop and get a carton.

Freedom and victory.

Double-digits for you tomorrow, Giant.
