Congrats! I quit the 1st part of Sept. after having to be in the Hosp. for a week because I couldnt breathe. I started smoking a lot after I found my 18 yr old son dead. My other children are very happy I stopped. You have all of my support! Keep it up! Although, if I find out the world REALLY IS going to end on Dec. 21, well. I am smoking! LOL
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1397085

Huge congratulations to you. I smoked as a teen and quit in my early 20s. Then when I lost my mom unexpectedly a few years later, I started up again. Proud to say I haven't had one since the 1st part of September as well. Condolences on your loss. I truly can't imagine. For me, I felt like there was some acceptance of my loss that came along with quitting, since my smoking was tied to a death the way your increase in smoking was. You are STRONG and I know you can stick with it. And I'm with you... I'm lighting up if we know for sure a huge asteroid is coming to kill us all or something! LOL Seriously though. Congrats to you and all who have managed to kill the beast. It is so hard, but it truly is worth it. Tell your brain you are smarter than it is.

Some one on GLP posted that taking a mouthful of cranberry juice will help you get past the craving.

After 20 years I quit on Aug 1st. Cold turkey, you have be ready to do it. A great app that helped me along is called cessation nation, keeps track of how much money you've saved, how many smokes you would have smoked, you health regineration, its awesome..i highly recommend it!

Btw:

I quit Aug 1st
Its been 81 days and 19 hrs
I have saved $561.39
I WOULD have smoked 1,636.44 cigarettes!!

get the app its like XBOX achievements

Gives you something to work for! :)

Good luck to anyone ready to quit!

After the first two weeks it is not bad AT ALL! then you spend the next couple weeks after that just trying to shake the bad habits and triggers ie: coffee, after sex, etc.

The most important thing:: do it when YOU are ready. I turned it off like a light switch!

i had a friend who used to say smoker look retarded, puffing at a stick of tabacoo, liten up and inhaling poisonous substances that make them smell bad.

he's got a point there, yet, every time, i am in a bad situation emotionally i go back to smkoking.

quit firtst time at 24, 33 now, and started smoking again after a really bad marriage, separation/divorce, after maybe three-four years of non smoking.

Good luck friend, Chantix makes it easier for sure. Just be aware of the side effects and if you start having any of them quit taking it.

Desert, congrats on getting this far and please keep it going. I've smoked for about 25 years and have a quit date with my wife for mid-November. Alot of great advise in this thread; please GLP'ers, keep bumping. Upon quitting, one thing i will not miss is going outside in the winter months (New Hampshire, brrrr) and freezing my fingers and the way that the nasty stench of smoke seems to cling to your coat and follow you inside. then you grab your coat for the next butt and it smells like a nasty ass ashtray. Arghhh, I am so ready. Again, awesome job Desert...don't give up!! you will be breathing freely and running about in no time.

For years I thought it would be enjoyable to have a smoke. Maybe eight years. Nicotine is prolly the most most addictive molecule on the planet. In comparison, everything else is merely a habit.

Been a tough day so far. Especially when I got to work. I have chewed on a couple pieces of nicotine gum, when it got real bad.

I'm not going to be able to have a beer for a long time...
