That's a great story, Hawk. Thanks for posting it. It's those turning points we remember.

As an eight-grader, I got pinched by my father while I was smoking a cigar outside of Mass (in an alley abutting the church) with a buddy named Gunner Gumina and another kid we called Dorky Berner. My father rolled-up, my eyes rolled back (from both the cigar and my father's arrival), and he yanked me into the car. We drove to a playground a couple blocks away and he made me smoke half the cigar. I was dizzy, green, and no longer a fan of cigars. We got in the car and he said, "Next time I see you with a cigar you're in trouble."

A week later, I started smoking cigarettes.

Thanks for sharing your memory and prompting one for me. The real deal.

Congratulations on another day clean for you. You laying low for the weekend?

All best.

Good, as always, to see you Oddballs. Congratulations on your continued smoke-free time.

The pounds will come-off, brother. And, you're right, running will be easier with clear breathing (and you don't have to dodge backdraft ash from a bobbing cigarette as you run). Keep doing what your doing.

I'm certain your wife will stop when she's ready.

Always great to read and see you here.

Best to you.

I had 3 emotional mental downs today.

Messy, messy and messy.

I eventually broke down in tears from the stress of it all - the last being I paid off my student loan and now because I consolidated the loan the debt collectors are looking for another $10,000 in blood.

IT was the last straw in an awful day and I kept saying to the really awesome people around me - I want to smoke. I will quit again tomorrow - they would not hear of it and talked me out of it.

IF they weren't with me today, I would have been writing about my 'slip' tomorrow.

Thank you for allowing the voice of LOVE to speak through your words Salt.

I haven't said the Serenity Prayer in many years. Time to do so again.

I feel very small and tired right now.

Tomorrow, its another day and I will do the best I can and continue to move forward.

lol on the Freudian slip - meant melt downs put mental downs - truth is truth - I was mental!

God,

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.

So nice to see and hear from you, OneLove.

Perception. No matter how things may appear, all is well.

All is well.

Thank goodness for the friends and love surrounding you today. I'm so very happy you didn't smoke. I've know those moments when all clarity is shadowed by the lie of a quick fix. Have known the need to turn the wheel and open the escape hatch that inevitiably leads to a reality far worse than the one I hope to flee.

No nefarious debt collector could ever exact the weighty toll you'd pay waking-up tomorrow with the knowledge you smoked after all the loving consideration you've given yourself in this enormous endeavor. No loan could demand the penalty of weighted heart and withered health turning from the road of love and gentle compassion you've embarked on would. Money comes and money goes. At best, it's an energy that affords us some mobility. At worse, it smothers the soul. In both cases, you're more magnificent than money considerations can ever promise, or threaten to be.

You know where all life flows from.

Your being free of the smokes means much to me, OneLove. I am so very grateful this challenge came to you and you arrived where you did. So very happy you chose life. Chose the love.

As always, I wish you all the wonders of Jah and this journey.

In 2 weeks it will be 1 year free of cigarettes and weed. The non-stressful way to stop for me was e-cigarettes for about 2 months.

I feel healthy and walk miles every day now. A lot better than PS3, cigs and booze.

Spent 20+ years of my life feeling like shit due to smokes. No more!

BBoris -Just short of a year is huge. Please, if your schedule allows, stop here on your anniversary so we can share in your accomplishment. Those recently freed from the toxic sticks would benefit greatly hearing from you on your one year anniversary.

A year. A mountain of a milestone.

Great congratulations.

Here's to a long life of health and happiness to you.

Went to Atlantic City and drank so much that I had a stinkarette after quitting about three years ago. Next day felt like shit obviously from booze and smoking.

I have been having panic attacks ever since like never before in my life! DAMN Probably other stress too but man it seems like the cigs started this panic shit!

Hey, Salt - Have to say I love "so quiet here I can hear the hum of the frig."

Talk about painting sound and sight. If I ever settle-down to write, I might have to borrow (truth be told, steal) that line from you. I like it that much.

You're a lean horse for a long race, sister. Metabolism's just adjusting.

That said, thank goodness the frig is just humming. If it was belting-out a tune.... whoa, mama!

Hope you had a gentle night.

CHL2T -

I realized this morning that my emoticons may have read as insensitive and laughing at you and your weight gain -

Actually what I was trying to convey through the emoticons

1. Laughing - OMG I was just looking at my belly today and how much it has grown since I quit smoking and here you are bring it up!

2. Oh nooo!

me too!

3. Ooooops! gotta stop putting so much food in my mouth

Anyhow without the interpretation I realized it may have come across as making fun of you which I would never do!!! You have been such a great help to myself and others....

Well, this experience has helped to break my recent emoticon dependency....

Day 168. Had a chest x ray last week. My lungs were nice and clear. The doctor said they look good. So that's good right? I thought they would look worse. Had a breathing test also, they said I had the lungs of a 46 year old(I'm 38) so maybe that's something I can work on. Still my overall health is improving daily. So quitting today is only going to help you all the way around. Keep on being a bunch of quitters!!

Hi Everyone,

Been following this thread since it started. I have been a smoker for 35 years. I am still a smoker and have decided that I will become a non-smoker on 3-13-13.

I am nervous however I need to let it go. I have quit before for 3 weeks on Chantix, then I had to stop the meds as it was eating my stomach lining, started smoking the same day I quit the meds. I have been hypnotized 3 times, never worked on me. I have read Allen Carr's books both the original and the one for women, still smoking.

I am open to any suggestions to help me make this happen this time.

Thank you to all who are on this thread and the work you do to help us all be and stay non-smokers.

Excellent number choice which is a good first step - mine was 1-1-13.

My suggestions would be:

Go back at least 60 pages and read to the most present post. You will find excellent suggestions from recent posters who have quit within varying degrees in the last 300 days.

Then...just do it. Dive in and just do it.

Sooo congrats on the lungs of the (46) year old at 38 - you are young enough to move forward in time as the your lungs become younger and younger by not smoking and exercising.

Thanks for the positive message to all quitters and soon to be when ready quitters alike!
