Interesting

Propylene glycol is the most commonly used preservative for tobacco, so you are smoking it when you smoke cigarettes anyway.

Glycerol is used in everything from cough syrup to medicines.

So what you are saying is that you can smoke propylene glycol and you feel fine, but vaporizing and consuming it at a lower temperature makes you have an allergic reaction ?

I'll have to ask my housemate about this, he's a biochemist who currently works designing e-liquids for e-smokes here in NC.

Very strange.

all i know is that the smoke from smoke machines, and the liquid you buy to put in them, makes me swell up - lips, eyelids, etc. when i am in a nightclub that has the older type smoke machines, the smoke is barely breathable for me. have to leave the room. we rented a smoke machine for a halloween party we had one year. you had to pour this clear liquid into it and i got some on my hands, then on my face, and it made my lips and eyes swell up like a mofo.

Interesting.

Glycerol is a normal chemical precursor for synthesis of triacylglycerols and of phospholipids in the liver and adipose tissue.

I'm curious why you'd have a reaction to it when it's part of normal body chemistry.

You have other allergies ?
 Quoting: !saac

it's ok in small doses. but in larger doses it is toxic for anybody.

im allergic to all kinds of shit. wheat, gluten, mold, latex...

i remember back in the old days, when i worked in an old print shop, we used to use liquid glycerine on our fingers when handling paper to help us sort thru sheets. i broke out in big welts all over my face.
 Quoting: Salt

You must be very sensitive to it, the human body creates it and releases it into the bloodstream anytime fat is converted.

Glycerol is toxic in extremely large doses, but you'd have to consume a very large amount.

So are you allergic to all the products in the consumer market that use glycerin ?

i worked in the printing trade for 25 years. i had to retire from it because of all the chemicals. i came down with Gulf War Syndrome (chemical sensitivity syndrome) because of the many years of being saturated with all the chems. the cigs i smoke are American Spirits. they don't seem to bother me much outside of the lung fatigue. And, even then, i only smoke a few a day, like maybe 5 or so.

Re: I QUIT SMOKING , YOU CAN TOO. I QUIT SEPT 27, 2012, SUPPORT EACH OTHER HERE
Morning - Morning of Day Two, thanks for asking DesFox. A little dicey this morning (crazy dreams last night), but as I write I've been up two hours and haven't smoked. I was concerned about the morning ritual of smoke and coffee, but thus far I'm doing ok. When hit (really slammed) with an urge, I tell myself if I pick-up a smoke I'll just have to go through the shit again and all those hours clean would have been wasted. So ok for today thus far.

I read another quit smoking post here on glp and the OP was an Aussie who recommended cranberry juice to compensate for the blood sugar drops affiliated with knocking down the nicotine. He made a lot of sense so in addition to all the other fruits/vegs I'm going to juice today I plan on getting some cranberry juice as well. Whatever it takes, you know.

I've been met with such grace here on this thread and I'm so grateful you started it DesFox. Given the support and good fellowship I received, I feel compelled to clarify something and I don't know why but it makes me feel ashamed. I don't believe I said I was going to quit cold turkey, but just for my piece of mind I want to say I'm wearing a 21mg patch. I don't know why that's important for me to say, but it is. I just don't want to present myself in any other way but with the truth (and I think the support I've been given here has earned absolute truth). That said, wearing the patch makes me feel a little weak or a cheater. When all is said and done I'm not the tough/hard man I like to think I am but I'm certainly smart enough to know that this nicotine addiction is much much stronger than me. Still, wearing the patch makes me feel like I'm cutting a corner instead of going through it straight-on. Of course, this thinking could just be a set-up to have me take the patch off - again, for me, this addiction is cunning and baffling - and I guarantee I'd be smoking like a lunatic within hours. So I'll keep the patch on for today and ignore my, more than likely, irrational thoughts on this. Did I mention I feel like an absolute nutter this more?

So that's it (I'm rambling like a crazy man and more than a bit mental. Day two. Elvis is dead and I'm not feeling too good myself. But I'm smoke free.
As always, thanks for being there and giving me a place to post with kindred souls. Best - Mac

Dude, ramble away. All of us who have quit understand the emotional roller coaster of quitting. You got good advise on the cranberry juice; keep it close by at all times. As for the patch, whatever it takes to be smoke free. It doesn't make you any less of a man to need the help, rather the fact that you've been smoke free for 2 days makes you alot tougher than the majority of people that try to give up the filthy habit. Speaking of filthy, keep reminding yourself of all those reasons you are quitting.

I'm on day 12 of cold turkey and I feel fucking great. Urges(now just mornings, post meals, post sex and with alcohol) pass pretty quickly. I don't stink. My blood pressure has dropped 10 points. My complexion is cleaner. I can take deep ass breaths and it feels unrestricted and good. I havn't gotten a single hang-over since quitting and i had a couple binge nights. So much more energy; i can sleep less than 6 hours and perform just fine; used to need more like 7. My kids don't follow me outside during smoke time. Between my wife(quit partner) and I, we've saved like $120. Keep it up and you will realize things like i listed and many more.
YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!

RicRoc - Congratulations! You are doing awesome! It is amazing how quickly the body starts to heal, isn't it? And you managed to still drink alcohol during the first 2 weeks?! drinks worship speedbanan Good for you! Keep it up!

BxMac - You are doing GREAT!! Don't feel bad about the patch! Are you kidding? You are kicking butt! Your lungs and throat are healing. Your skin is improving. You are doing awesome things for yourself, even paying less taxes to Big Brother by not buying more cigarettes. What works for one person doesn't work for everyone, and if the patch makes this a successful quit for you, then that is great. Back when I quit the first time (before I started up again after a 7-year hiatus), I tried the patch and it gave me the craziest dreams and made me feel just terrible, so I couldn't use it. You are doing great though. You ARE stronger than this addiction. You are teaching your brain that you do not need a cigarette. Take it 1 cigarette at a time if 1 day at a time is too overwhelming. Just tell yourself that you will not smoke for at least the next hour no matter what. Then if you survive that hour, do it again. And again. Stick with it!

Salt - It's alright that you caved. I think at least 50 packs of cigarettes was the last pack I was ever going to buy. And probably more times than that I smoked my last cigarette. One of them really will be though. Hang in there.

For me, I stopped making "the day" a big deal. When I planned on a big quit day a few days into the future, it just built up my anxiety. Some day, just skip a usual smoke. Then see if you can skip the next one maybe. Anyway, just wanted to tell you others know how it is.

Thanks Ric and Gratia. Yeah, it's crazy here, but I have moments of great hope and dare say almost an excited happiness. I've been smoking 40 years with the last three with a two pack of Newports a day habit. Crazy stupid. I'd drive to Virginia from NY just to get cheaper smokes. Crazy. What a slave racket. The cost alone is like whip me, beat me, make me write bad checks. The physical, I don't even want to think about the poison I put in my body over the years (although, the embalming fluid, nail polish remover, and other like addititives found in smokes couldn't be dumped in a landfill) but thankfully I'm still here to tell the tale. It's only a moment of clarity and grace that led me to this point of quitting. It's a slow ignoble form of suicide and I've lived my life saying to myself in different situations, "If my wife and children could see me and imy response to this situation, would they be proud of me or ashamed." That's always helped and this is no different. I want to do this for me and as an example for my children by having my beliefs match my actions (again, a rambling lunatic here - apologies).

I like the idea of an hour at a time rather than a day at a time. That helps (I found myself thinking about this evening when the whole family's home - four great children and a wonderful wife - and started to get a little overwhelmed so the hour at a time is a homerun).

Thanks for the support and taking the time out of your days to give me a boost. Best to you and yours. - Mac

Not rambling and not a lunatic by any means. You are well-spoken (er, well-written?) actually. My kids were my big motivation too. My parents both smoked my whole life, dad quit after a lung cancer scare then started again. My oldest child is at the age where if I quit now, she'll probably never remember me smoking, but if I waited even 1 more year or 2, she might. Anyway, that's a great piece of advice for any situation one might encounter in life -- would it make those you love proud of you or not?

In previous failed quit attempts, the idea of never smoking again just overwhelmed me. Even now I take it hours at a time when I get an urge. (It's been 3 months for me.) This might sound stupid, but I have told myself I can start again if I want to when both kids move out of the house. LOL So in 18-22 years I can have another cigarette. See? Ridiculous how we need to know we CAN have another one, we are just choosing not to for the time being. For the next hour, the next day, the next week... whatever.

I am proud of you, Mac. Be proud of yourself. Best to you as well!

Thanks, on many levels, Gratia. I know from whence you speak regarding your youngest and your desire he/she does not have a recollection of your smoking. Sense of smell is evocative and I don't want my youngest (just turned three - my great surprise this late in life) to associate safety and comfort with the smell of cigs. And while my oldest three children were subjected to the smell of smokes on me (at least I had the presence of mind to smoke outside the home after they were born), they, thankfully, have abstained thus far.

I like your thought on smoking 20 some years down the road. It's funny and I can relate. I know I enjoyed aspects of smoking (physically and emotionally), but it truly was a privilidge I abused and my smoking was primarily driven by addiction not pleasure no matter how I try to dupe myself otherwise.

Congrats on your time free from smokes (and your kick-ass time as well RicRoc). Rock stars for today. We are. Okay for today, class of 2012. Thanks for all.

I smoke weed because who doesnt, but I also smoke cigs and I am trying to quit. they say 90% of smokers want to quit! but only a few can be successful. I wanna be successful but its so hard for me. I never have nicotine cravings, but I'm addicted more to the routine of smoking (a cig after dinner, a cig after work, etc...) Breaking this routine is very hard for me since its so engrained in my every day life :(

Morning Friends - Day three for me (and welcome to day three to you Anon 739, congratulations and it's great to have someone with the same day count to pack the smokes away with - and I seem to be doing ok.

Had a slamming headache all night and this morning and was pretty sure lack of caffiene had something to do with it. Despite my reservations of having a cup of coffee this morning- for me, the old coffee/cig combo was always a pleasure - I didn't fiend for a smoke and the headache is fading. I'll take those tender mercies where I find them.

I do find I'm a little raw and wired. I haven't spilled-over on my family, but I find I'm coiled and wound a little too tight. Before coming to this safe-haven thread, I read a thread on the forum about someone getting pinched (if, indeed, he really did get arrested) for picking-up a bike left in the trash. The ensuing threads seemingly brought the biggest knuckleheads to the fore. Just stupid.

In keeping with this, I have to ask DFDOE why he'd come to a thread where people are attempting to quit and offer support to each other if 1. you've been off cigs for four years, and 2. the thrust of your wisdom comes down to "you're a fucking wimp and you'll never get off them." How does that help anyone? Does it help you? Do you feel like the upper companion and somewhat superior by writing that? I sincerely don't get it and, unfortunately, I'm unable to tap into my higher self at this time and I'm left with nothing better to say than "blow me, ass clown."

DesFox, read your post last evening and remain so grateful this thread is here. I have returned to this thread no less than six-eight times a day since quitting Monday. A safe haven and respite among kindred souls (even, potentially, that hump DFDOE is valuable as "they also serve those who stand and wait"). Grateful to all.

Again, congrats to you Anon 739. Day three for us. Let's fight the good fight.
Best - Mac

Re: I QUIT SMOKING , YOU CAN TOO. I QUIT SEPT 27, 2012, SUPPORT EACH OTHER HERE
The first time I inhaled tobacco I was 13. I'm 19 now. I was never big on cigs until earlier this year, when I made a new friend who would smoke me out. Then from there I spiraled out and would smoke like half a pack a day. I mostly can't take the mental addiction, lose of money and time.
I've been toying with the idea of quitting for sometime, but I made a break through last night. So yesterday I punked out an bought a pack of smokes. I fiendishly smoked them all day, you know to make up for lost time! But, holy shit I had the worst headache in my life. I could not eat, I felt like puking and I thought my head was going to crack open. I prayed to god that if I did not die in my sleep, I would not do tobacco anymore. Then this morning I woke up feeling great! I have no cig cravings, since the thought of one makes me want to throw up. I think that I took in too much nicotine.

I did that before also. I was going on a trip to the mountains, decided to buy a black n mild. I smoked it all up and bought one more. Half way through the second one I got the spins and cold sweats. I started shaking then after I parked, I up chucked and passed out :(

In all honesty, I have found smoking to be a harder habit to quit than anything else that I've ever done. Even tougher than quitting masturbation or opiates! But that's just me and my lifestyle.

I wish all the best of luck to everyone who decides to quit. Keep this thread up!!!

Anon 99 - Congrats on day one. Should you want to quit, I know you can. Certainly, you're way ahead of the game wanting to stop now. In my 20s, I didn't even think of quitting so you can save a lot of dough and a lot of freakin' grief physically and emotionally if you kick them now. I'm pulling for ya brother. I believe without any doubt you can do it and deserve it if you want it. Best.

Quit 7/4/08. No drugs, no bullshit. Just stopped and dealt with it. If you choose any of the so-called remedies, you're a fucking wimp and you'll NEVER get off them, just STOP for Christ's sakes!

Not that easy for some, everyone is different and what ever works for them is right for them. IMO DF

Morning- Day 4. Again, crazy dreams last night and strong urges this morning, but I'm finding the urges pass and I'm happy and amazed I'm not smoking. Very grateful this is really happening and I'm smoke-free. My family is thrilled and I feel pretty hopeful. Cranberry juice, cinnamon sticks, and peppermint help. Going to stop using the patch at 5:00 this evening (figure the patch gave me 3.5 days away from actual cigs so I'll see if I can begin to get all nicotine out of my system starting this evening). If the urges get to intense and it's a choice between a cig and the patch, I'll slap a patch back on. Best to all.
