BxMac User ID: 18472095 United States 12/28/2012 01:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | n any event, a cigarette will add nothing but self-loathing to our lives. Despite the whispered lies ('a smoke will take the edge off, I can start my quit again tomorrow, hey, if I quit this long, I can do it again, or simply a fuck-it') a cigarette will no longer deliver for us. We've all gotten far enough from the day-to-day, cigarette-after-cigarette life to see the lie for what it is no matter what our minds may tell us. For myself, I had a terrible time with the smokes over the holidays. I wanted to smoke very, very, badly. I caused fights with my wife, I wanted to get away from my extended family, I wanted to slip away from my kids. I wanted to smoke. I wanted to smoke more than I wanted not to smoke (despite telling myself all the great things about being clean). But I didn't smoke. And the reason? It wasn't because I was strong (I'm not). It wasn't because I cared about myself (I've spent a lifetime not really caring and being intentionally vague to myself about myself). I didn't smoke because it would be just one more thing for me to beat myself up over. One more thing for my internal tyrant to tell me that I really was garbage and not worth much at all. I didn't smoke because there was just a glimmer, a reference point these last three weeks and change have given me, that I was more than a cigarette. More (despite my protective cynacism) to me than being just some schmuck doing the charlie potatoes shuffle slouching toward my next smoke and the next thing to hurt myself and my opinion of myself. Fuck that. It was a battle, DesFox, but I didn't smoke. Reading your comments over the last three weeks has shown me you're a good and kind man, DF. While at work, I am constantly having mini cravings everytime I finish a phase or mix or pass or whatever, I used to "reward" myself with smoking. Now after reprogramming the analyzer, I know for a fact that the real reward is in the NOT smoking and that my friends was an amazing realization Still having the regular craving, but eating more, sleeping less, working harder, excercising more, spending more time with the family, laughing more and a general lust for life which has been tamped down way too long. I also feel like I am tasting and smelling everything for the first time and as I said in an earlier post, the smeller being better aint necessarily a good thing....lol Later ..... |

Oh Kona, that's a bad joke but i figure you might have a sense of humour about it eh? Because after the worse has happened, what have we got left but laughter? Maybe I'm being insensitive... Maybe the side effect of not smoking is complete insensitivity. I actually laughed looking at this... [link to whyquit.com] Now I feel guilty... Guilt. Oh Guilt. How would I ever get anything done without it? LOL, of course! I just happened to be rather unlucky. You did read my sig, right? Happy so many are kicking the cigs. Be proud of yourselves! And if it doesn't work this time, never quit trying. Edited to add... I didn't mean to discourage anyone. It wasn't my intent at all. But please, if you ever do feel sick to your stomach, weird, and hearts in fast flutters while using the patch, get to the ER quick! And most of all, please don't ever put the patch near your heart. I had mine just above it on my chest kinda close to my shoulder. I was running out of places to 'hide' it, and was stupid and put it there, and that is what started it all. If it works, just be careful and go for it. Sorry if I bummed anyone out. Mine was just a string of really bad misdiagnosis-es..misdiagnoses? anyways. Just wanted to make it clear. I think you give very good advice about not putting the patch near the heart. Those are excellent signs to look for. I am sorry things went so badly for you. Life is unfair. So far things are fine for me. I don't wear it at night and I actually wear each one two days in a row. I'm still grumpy though. 19 days into it and 8 days since my flowerpot cheat. Once I hit 14 days on my flowerpot cheat I'm going to claim victory... for the day anyway. :) I can relate to Mac's fight-picking behaviour. Man oh man I can be grumpy... just for a reason to give it all up. Something in me this time is saying no though. How's everyone else doing? |

Desert Fox (OP) User ID: 8786935 United States 12/29/2012 07:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am quitting tonight, this is my last day. Any advice besides cold turkey? how long do the withdrawals last? (I have been smoking 2 packs a day for the last 30 years) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29922547 Go for it, have juices, snacks, gum ect. handy. Try a mouth full of a cranberry type drink to ease the urge. Stay busy, avoid arguments, drinking beer ect. Drink lots of water, eat lots of fruits. Withdrawals are the worst the first 3 or 4 days, urges go on much longer. Determination and will power are very much needed. You will find great support here in this thread, please share with us how you are doing and just talk to supporters here. Many here will stand with you.
