I paint, and the quality of oil based paint has gone down unless you want to spend alot of $$ for a tube. The more it costs the smoother, better oil paint you get. Also, my oils dry pretty quickly now, not like 20 yrs ago when I could re-work a painting before it dried. No conspiracy, just greed. Lots of money in paint. Brushes are expensive too. |

Brushes are expensive too. yes, in america i do recall that there's an art shop making good oils(by the rep i see arounf), but there is no oil that supposedly does that open window of time. heck, i've been into some tubes of old holland and they are just a lil more open (depending on pigments) than talens rembrant line, and i kept buying rembr. bcoz i get 50% discount. so, how do i get to a good oil that keeps open more time? i'm just rediscovering that adding a bit of walnut refined oil to my rembrants keeps them more open than the same quantity of linen oil, as strange as it may seem. as so, i do find that i can get more ratio of body/openess with walnut. i wonder what other oils went missing from the formulations, as it's the main thing keeping pigments workable and wet. of course you have other ingredients, but i believe the secret lies in the mixture of oils. some mixes have their unique trait if blended well. i need to work with more oils, as i find rather strange that you have such large quantity of poppy oil and other brittle oils around and no walnut or mixes in art stores. it's just weird that they don't do mixing in regard to the veichle of paint, as most of the formulas do involve mixing. cmon people, discuss |

The oil paint manufacturers are losing $$ so they are finding ways to make it up. Sad really, it is an ancient art form, the creating of paint. Keep experimenting. Painting with oils and gouche and acrylic is my therapy, I will never give it up and turn to the computer to create my art. Tho, the artists on teh computer do make some beuatiful art. peace |
