I would say there was no political motive. He was student who could not get a flat, quite weird story, but no, i believe someone wishing to make a political statement would at least leave some letter, do some protest beforehand, whatever. And the Reichstag is not that much a political symbol in Germany as many abroad seem to believe, probably because of the images from the end of the war and the reunification.

The german economy for example has been remarkable good during the last 3 years. Noone expected that. Sometimes economies get back on feet. It just happens.

Never underestimate the will of all important people involved to keep the current system going.

And for what reason would that be.. remember that we are past peak oil.. This is the reason for the economic problems, and unless someone comes up with a new energy source.. things wont get better
