Silicates are widely distributed in nature, making up most of the earth's outer crust. Most of the common rock-forming minerals (e.g., quartz, feldspar, mica, and pyroxene) are silicates, as are asbestos, beryl, aquamarine, emerald, serpentine, and talc. Clay consists essentially of hydrous aluminum silicates mixed with other substances. Glass is a mixture of silicates, as is water glass.

no. Spelling comes from the creativity part of your brain, and has nothing to little to do with the intelligence. The worse your spelling, the more creative youare.- a creature of the arts in other words-, not of this world.

Thats a scary thought.

When computers can start to learn we are in trouble. They can do so much more than we can and so much quicker. In the next few decades Humanity will have to decide how far they want to go with AI.

We don't want to make Cylons or Geth after all.
 Quoting: l3ol3o
...so what happens if people are fitted with stimocievers early in life connected to A.I. teaching it human responses though out the persons life time ? would the computer think the person was god,its creator perhaps?
 Quoting: T Ceti H.C. Radnarg

It will think all day, but never feel, love or grow naturally has God's natural creation meant to live as nature evolves. If we take out the feeling, the pain and love, we take out our whole purpose of life.

Are you claiming a computer will suddenly become embarrassed or that it will become aware of it's actions?

As even moderate A.I is awareness to a degree in that it creates individuated parameters and a call to function.

Re: We are about to reach a point where the computer becomes self conscious
The reason is the computer would have to be biological in the first place to gain any sort of consciousness, and that will not happen with chips and electrical wire-ings.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4436859

Conciousness is not it's material, but a function independent and limited by it.

To a point: Conciousness (as electricity) either flows or is stored in a dielectric as a form of memory and continued independance enwrapped in the bias and limitation of whichever material it is housed.
 Quoting: Dionysian Fullaflattus

This. Consciousness is a function of pre-requisite conditions which allow for an entity to attempt to improve its situation.

The first conscious computer wont be like 'Hey Im Fred hows it going?'

It will show minimal but CONCRETELY evident and independent intelligence as it attempts to evolve and improve its personal situation, like a cell, or an insect. It will of course be limited by its hardware, like an insects intelligence is limited by its tiny brain, but, an insect is conscious. Perhaps not as sentient as a human, but it doesnt act based on a program like a computer does.

Even a simple biological one-cell organism has more big C 'Consciousness' and intelligence than the best mega-computer.

When the first super computer's hardware becomes complex enough to allow it to act independently of its programs and exhibit true intelligence, we will have achieved artificial consciousness.

But, then, who are we to say its 'artificial?'

Re: We are about to reach a point where the computer becomes self conscious
I'm really very surprised that nobody has brought up that we ALREADY have Earth Simulators running on some of the most powerful "steel" built over the last few years... (the term "steel" here is used as slang for SuperComputers, for which there is a YEARLY competition for building the most powerful....)

Actually, those Earth Simulators have been around for at least TEN years. And they just get more and more powerful, following Moore's Law of Computing (Computing Power DOUBLES every Eighteen Months).

The Earth Simulator is fairly all-encompassing in what exactly it does and the data you can glean from it. You could forecast weather for the next few years, or be able to accurately predict population swell/decline in specific areas of the globe. You could run disease pandemic scenarios. You could run World-War simulations. You could predict the yield of food crops for years ahead. etc. etc.

This is not new by any means, though it might be new to you.

I built a simulator of the Human Renal System when I worked as a dialysis technician, so that we could visualize what was happening with patients during the progression of their disease. It took into account the Food/Drink/Activity/Age/Sex/Weight/ of the patient, along with their current state of progression. It never got past being used as a supplemental tool, but back then (2001-2003) it was very early-stage software, and I was the only person working on it...As for what that same project does NOW, that is anyones guess. I discontinued my own work on that codebase in November 2003.

i think i had one. It was from a new, little company on the East Coast that finally went out of business. They built the computer for you and immediately sent it to you. Itwas my first computer. I had a lot of trouble with it and had many changes/repairs made on it, including the hard drive being removed, and handed back to me, which I saved, but over the years lost track of it.

In a dream; a sad, little girl sitting on the floor; at a screen door said, "I couldnot find you". I knew it was that computer, and to this day i choke up with tears over it.

Realistically though, when someone finally builds a working full scale quantum computer, that may be when we see a truly self aware machine.

This is why we equate our lives to the matrix. Because it IS very similar to a computer program. We do not reside in a computer program. Our consciousness is VERY similar to a computer program. Plenty of info and links on here showing we are definitely on our way to discovering computer type coded consciousness that already exists(life as we know it is built upon 1's and 0's). And furthermore we have already discovered silicon based life forms on our own planet. Open your mind and live a little. Or don't if you so choose to do so. It doesn't matter much to me. I just wanted to point out that a one liner and bs flag plastering is not going to cut it or change the facts presented in this thread. Perhaps you should try reading through it. Or is that to much to ask?
