Re: American accents repulse me....
I don't like my own accent, cos it seems too 'common' when compared to the American posh accents.

I live not far from Manchester, and I sound like that English woman on Frasier, and I always think she sounds out of place and 'lower class', and very 'contrived' whenever she tries to 'talk posh'.

That's interesting. I notice the more class-division pounded to death worry about such things. I knew a cockney and he was SO aware of this. He seemed alright to me.

Raised in/around New Yawkers we didn't do the accent since my parents were canadian/californian. But now that I've gone from there I find comfort in that accent upon hearing it, crude as it is.
Interesting from my point of view anyway, is how u.s. southerners say "no" the same way I hear it from lots of english which is more like, "naer". Haven't dropped that given 235 years.

Try to understand someone with a scottish accent.. Impossible

I used to have a Scottish friend who had to translate Billy Connelly for me, now even his old albums are easy to understand it's just practice.

Love the US Southern Twang from Oklahoma and Tennesee, the Texas drawl is ok too. Not liking the New York or Brooklyn accent much though, that makes my teeth hurt.
