Well while that's true, unfortunately sometimes you lack the required historical frame of reference to predict certain necessary outcomes, so hypothesis comes in handy.

There are two paths to take for civilization to prosper indefinitely and steadily, either you isolate yourself, make sure you can always defend your land and attempt to do honest commerce with other nations, or you utterly destroy the other nations until nothing remain and then take over their possessions.

You don't just go half way or else you end with the mess we got now.
