International Phonetic Alphabet I distinctively remember being forced to learn this in 2nd grade. I think it was some experimental teaching conducted on only certain students.. I remember I thought it was stupid.. [ link to en.wikipedia.org] I learned it in one of my communication classes in college. It is goo so that you can read foreign languages and pronounce correctly - was one benefit. plus it was fun.
