Late 69-70 for me.
I think it is an exceptional way to learn sounds and letters.

personally, I fell behind the class in reading, writing and spelling, but was able to adjust quickly after changing schools. Others were not so lucky. I recall the teachers having a fit about it(back when they were still allowed to voice their opinions about such things).

I found it useless and irresponsible to experiment on basic reading and writing skills. Perhaps it is useful to learn after these basic skills are already learned. An 8th grader might find it useful to assist learning another language.
