“Threads” is based on "Operation Square Leg" a British government wargame simulation of a full-scale nuclear war.
The scenario was based on a European War scenario researched by a British General, for Al Haig, who was NATO Commander 1974-1979.
Tom Clancy later used this same report as the basis for his book "Red Storm Rising".
