So I moved into this neighbourhood once. There were only maybe 40 people in the entire area. The one that lived on the hill used to sit there with a telescope spying on the other ones at all hours. She once asked me about something I was doing in my yard at 3 AM the prior morning...so it really was ALL hours. She single-handedly managed to turn half the neighbourhood into paranoid schizos. The whispered conversations they'd have with me about the "one who watched" with the quick glances over their shoulders..twilight zone.

Small towns are sinister.

Alot of people in small towns goto Radio Shack and buy scanners that pick up telephone calls. I edit my conversations (a little) when on the phone.

Yeah, prolly a familiar story to them, ie getting away from thecityetc...but the haircut lady knew my exwife wasa hoarder..specifically halloween items....and ya thereisnt much to do here:-)

You're not joking! I moved to a small town a year ago, they gossip like crazy.... and they seem to know EVERYTHING.

People in small towns are bored. I am willing to bet they knew you were coming before you even got there, and they had you Googled as soon as they knew your name. They also feel a need to know their neighbors and everything about them. I miss living in a small town, but you have zero privacy. They care about you, and each other, though. They may gossip, but if you don't show up for two days, they'll send someone to check on you. It's a balance.

I sense a Steven King or Clive Clustler novel afoot.

I live in a area like you describe, my husband and I left for a month recently, when we returned our neighbor on the hill called me not knowing it was us back. After realizing we were back somewhere in our conversation she revealed to me how she stands on her 2nd floor blacony and views the area with her binoculars, hmmff, wr are spread out here, I feel invaded.

It's creepy, isn't it?
I used to keep all the curtains drawn on the side of the house our nosy lady on the hill could easily see because I could just imagine her looking in.

I don't know about small towns.

One minute everything's all hunky dory, you're having supper with the neighbors, then before you know it you've been skinned alive and decorated with your own intestines and hung up by your feet from the rafters in somebody's barn while people square-dance around you to hillbilly violin music.

So..back from cooking the lunch shift....my new boss asked me how many fish i caught this a.m.....it was three and i didnt prompt the question...damn willies:-)
