It has a lot to due to "multi employer pension plans" this is a little known provision of union contracts. If a union shop goes out of business, then other companies must kick in more money to fund the underfunded pensions of employees that didn't even work for them. It is becoming too much for companies to pay and soon the day will come that the tide will go out and we will see the emperor has no swim trunks on!

Hostess does this every couple of years or so..then they back down. Last time was about a year ago.

Do yourself a favor. Don't eat their crap. Its unbelievably toxic for you.

Hostess (IBC) was bought out by an investment group a few years ago and they are now in the process of raiding the workers pension and healthcare funds. This is the type of "vulture" Capitalism that give Venture Capitalists a bad name.

But...but...but, they create "jobs". Just don't let the workers want good pay or benefits while they toil to make these guys richer.

Here's the way these 1% fascist works. They shut the plant down &/or sale the plant. The plant re-opens under new ownership and hires folks at HALF of what they were making before.

This is the death spiral of the middle class.

You think workers employed by many city and state governments have been fighting greedy bosses? Oh, just so happens most of those bosses have been labor-loving Democrats.

Guess what, genius. That doesn't matter. Pension plans are causing many governments throughout the US to see tons of red ink. Who's gonna pay for that shit? You, the taxpayer.

Notice how in the middle of that big stinking pile there are no investment firms or companies specializing in leveraged bailouts.

I know a couple of guys who deliver Hostess cakes and Wonder bread. This is the crap they have to deal with, in the middle of bankruptcy the CEO wanted to give himself and other managers a raise while asking the employees to take another 5% pay cut a cut in their Health Benefits and a severe cut in their Pension plan. The Judge bitch slapped him back into reality.

If the unions want to tell a company how much to pay,
and what hours they'll work, and what benefits to provide,
there is an easy solution.

The union bosses pool their money, get all the life
savings of the workers,
and start their OWN fucking companies.

Why not? Then they could run a company exactly the way
they, and the workers, want to run it.

Here's what would happen, IF they could accumulate
enough brains and funds to start their own company.

They would run it right into the ground.

Why?

Workers are workers for a reason.
They don't usually have the brains or the discipline
to organize anything more complex than a Sunday picnic.

Even WITH supervision, I've personally watched, as
union workers leaned on brooms and shovels, and bullshit
half the day away, until their bread and butter,
Bethlehem Steel faded into history.

Without supervision, you would be lucky to get an hour's
worth of work a day out of them.

I say fold up the company, fire every last one of the
union workers, and start over.

I wish I could say it would be a great and heart-felt loss. But it won't. Feel sorry for the people who will be out of work for a while. That's sad. But the product is shit and has been for decades. Better off not making it, IMHO!

Yes it's quite simple. There is an economic surplus available, because we have machines and technology that make our lives easier and better.

If you have people work these machines efficiently for 8 hours a day, the production is far more than enough to feed and house and educate that person and his or her whole family.

The question is: who gets that surplus?

The capitalist?
The worker?
The welfare recipient?
etc.

This simple analysis is in the tradition of "welfare economics" which used to be the standard, but now it's hardly taught and is replaced with "growth theory" which will favor giving all the surplus to the capitalist because he will create the most economic growth from it.

Unions cannot tell a Company what to do. They can on the other hand enforce contracts and invoke legal options the employees cannot. Unions are just workers sticking together so they don't get screwed by the big guys. If necessary an arbiter is called in to settle disputes. The arbiter is a non partisan third party that can settle a dispute fairly. Companies hate them because they don't think they should have to treat you fairly with respect.
