If a union shop goes out of business, then other companies must kick in more money to fund the underfunded pensions of employees that didn't even work for them. It is becoming too much for companies to pay and soon the day will come that the tide will go out and we will see the emperor has no swim trunks on! |

They shut the plant down &/or sale the plant. The plant re-opens under new ownership and hires folks at HALF of what they were making before. This is the death spiral of the middle class. This our corporations could make our junk food in China at slave wages and get it here fresh, they would...who could argue with that? Rayburn said Hostess is working to complete its restructuring and exit Chapter 11 in the next few months. He thanked company employees “for their continued hard work and commitment.” [link to bizbeatblog.dallasnews.com] |

Just don't let the workers want good pay or benefits while they toil to make these guys richer. Quoting: Sickandtired 17058124 There's plenty of greed to go around. You think workers employed by many city and state governments have been fighting greedy bosses? Oh, just so happens most of those bosses have been labor-loving Democrats. Guess what, genius. That doesn't matter. Pension plans are causing many governments throughout the US to see tons of red ink. Who's gonna pay for that shit? You, the taxpayer. Notice how in the middle of that big stinking pile there are no investment firms or companies specializing in leveraged bailouts. The company, which also makes Wonder Bread and the Drakes line of snack cakes, has more than $860 million in debt. This is Hostess’s second bankruptcy filing in less than a decade. Quoting: Although Hostess has sales of $2.5 billion annually, that’s not enough to keep up with the rising costs of ingredients like flour and sugar; the company also employs roughly 19,000 people, according to the Journal. Hostess went through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in 2004 and had trouble regaining its footing afterwards, in spite of investments and loans from private equity firms and hedge funds. The Journal reports that Hostess has lined up financing that would allow it to continue operating while in bankruptcy, so its ovens won’t be shut off just yet. But it appears America’s appetite for plastic-sheathed snack cakes might be waning; although we gobbled up 36 million packages of Twinkies last year, that’s actually a 2% decline from the year before. In response to an increasingly health-conscious public, Hostess started making whole-grain bread, but the Journal says it hasn’t been a hit. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 25542941 United States 10/14/2012 03:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If the unions want to tell a company how much to pay, and what hours they'll work, and what benefits to provide, there is an easy solution. The union bosses pool their money, get all the life savings of the workers, and start their OWN fucking companies. No? Why not? Then they could run a company exactly the way they, and the workers, want to run it. Here's what would happen, IF they could accumulate enough brains and funds to start their own company. They would run it right into the ground. Why? Workers are workers for a reason. They don't usually have the brains or the discipline to organize anything more complex than a Sunday picnic. Even WITH supervision, I've personally watched, as union workers leaned on brooms and shovels, and bullshit half the day away, until their bread and butter, Bethlehem Steel faded into history. Without supervision, you would be lucky to get an hour's worth of work a day out of them. I say fold up the company, fire every last one of the union workers, and start over. |

This our corporations could make our junk food in China at slave wages and get it here fresh, they would...who could argue with that? Yes it's quite simple. There is an economic surplus available, because we have machines and technology that make our lives easier and better. If you have people work these machines efficiently for 8 hours a day, the production is far more than enough to feed and house and educate that person and his or her whole family. The question is: who gets that surplus? The capitalist? The worker? The welfare recipient? etc. This simple analysis is in the tradition of "welfare economics" which used to be the standard, but now it's hardly taught and is replaced with "growth theory" which will favor giving all the surplus to the capitalist because he will create the most economic growth from it. |

Major_Payne User ID: 25560822 United States 10/14/2012 05:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Unions cannot tell a Company what to do. They can on the other hand enforce contracts and invoke legal options the employees cannot. Unions are just workers sticking together so they don't get screwed by the big guys. If necessary an arbiter is called in to settle disputes. The arbiter is a non partisan third party that can settle a dispute fairly. Companies hate them because they don't think they should have to treat you fairly with respect. |
