This is NOT just concentrated on 1 spot, even though they are in the same general area.... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25594815 [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] But it is all a huge caldera isn't it? Let us hope she does not erupt...it will not be good! |

Just looked at the area on Google maps, looks like it's right on the border... |

I would think it would be odd for a tourist to be there at this time of night. "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2911653 Because, Yellowstone is a caldera. A caldera is the mother of all volcanoes, or actually a circle of volcanoes that unzip together to destroy the human race. It will probably do nothing and we will move onto different doom tomorrow. But if we hit the Yellowstone lottery, then then millions of people will be instantly vaporized. Tens of millions of others will be buried under feet of ash, and billions will have to live and die with a new ice age that hits suddenly. It's the ultimate GLP doom. |

Yep, had a red flashing light or something on the top of the car as it was driving away... Looks like they were just checking on the timing of the geyser and to make sure there isn't oddities with it...A geyser changing it's usual pattern could give them a clue that's something up.... |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 25594815 United Kingdom 10/15/2012 01:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yep, and look at this recent article I just found, I will just post the juicy bit: Researchers ponder what's next in volcanic Yellowstone All in all, the review of Yellowstone's history makes it clear that it's an incredibly complex place with lots of things that can potentially influence its future behavior. Still, the authors manage to extract a few predictions from the chaos. In the paper, they note that the eruptions, earthquakes, and other indications of faulting cluster along three main lines: one along the western rim, one down the center of the caldera, and a third towards the east, partly underlying Yellowstone Lake. If eruptions were to resume, the authors suggest that these areas are likely to be the focus. But it's difficult to predict whether the eruptions would involve pyroclastic explosions or large lava flows. The extensive groundwater and lakes in the area could also add to the explosiveness of any eruptions. But there is bad news. An examination of the shape and composition of crystals formed in previous eruptions indicate that the molten material experienced a rapid ascent to the surface, and didn't end up sitting in pools closer to the surface before being ejected. This suggests that a recharging of the deep magma reservoir could lead to relatively rapid eruptions, and there might not be any clear sign of the magma moving towards the surface from there that would tip us off to the coming eruptions. Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 25594815 United Kingdom 10/15/2012 01:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Get's interesting....... The following was posted on Volcano Cafe who are talking about this little swarm... GeoLurking says: October 15, 2012 at 05:07 Not yet. But it is worth going back to an article that Erik had on a USGS report about likely areas for activity in Yellowstone. Right now, what I find interesting is that there was a relatively deep quake at about 10 km, and the later quakes are in the 6 to 8 km range. If I remember correctly, that’s mush area. A few years ago, there was a swarm that dropped off deeper as time went on. My guess is that was some sort of subsidence. Right now it’s too early to tell what’s up. It could just be flexure, as the thing is prone to do. I can’t say one way or the other whether it’s tectonic or not. I don’t have that skill set. It most likely is, but I poke around at stuff just like you do. [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |

The ground has been rising faster and faster each year. The gentleman in charge of monitoring yellow stone, can't remember his name, but has said on numerous occasions, that it could happen at any moment and we are way over due. He tells us that they measure the likelhood of its blowing its top based on ground swells and this year and last were double growth of all measured years combined. Hopefully, he releases a new report so we can see what affect, if any, this had on it. |

So expect a lot more quakes, if this is a swarm ,in the next few weeks. |
