Re: I found an 8+ year old grocery store recipt on the weekend. Wow...
1st thing I noticed, my wife and I have hardly changed anything about our buying and eating habits.

The 2nd thing I noticed was the crazy incrases we have had in prices.

1 can Campbells Vegetable soup was listed as $0.89
We now pay $2.19 for the same can.

Fresh Haddock Fillets were $3.99lb. Now $7.99lb.

4 litres of Skim Milk was $4.59...now $7.59.

1 loaf of whole wheat bread was $.99...now $2.99.

Fresh Green Pepper was $1.99lb...now $3.99lb.

Canned tomato juice was $0.99 a can...now $2.29 a can.

Obviously there was waaaaay more on the recipt, but I just can't believe the inflation. I'm sure many people have had to stop buying items the are used to buying, and change their life styles a great deal. I have not gotten to that point yet, but I'm feeling the pinch. It sucks.

Changes are needed.

I went yesterday and was in shock. I swear, some things that I buy have doubled in the past year alone. I didn't even have a cart full, mostly fruits, vegetables, some fresh shrimp, cereals, spices, rice, etc..

My tab was $286!
 Quoting: N3m3s1s

Its crazy. I find meat the very worst. I can hardly afford Chicken, Beef or Pork. The prices have gone through the roof.
 Quoting: Wash

Make more soup, stews and casseroles with the meat. It will go further. Plus you can cook these in quantities and freeze them for 'fast' food later on in the week/month. You will save money and time and still eat better and stay full.

My ten year old keeps asking me to make another 'surprise rice' dish that I whipped up two weeks ago from leftover rice, frozen pigeon peas, and 2 leftover chicken thighs topped with leftover mozzarella. She doesn't realize that wasn't planned beforehand! That surprise rice pot fed seven...and some even had seconds! girl_happy_brown
 Quoting: Kissplash

That's great! Leftovers keep me sane(not having to cook all the time) and everybody loves them. I suppose that is how many dishes we love these days were created. Just throw leftovers together and see what you get.LOL

Yes, I noticed the Campbell's soup price increase recently. It really is getting harder to afford going to the grocery. It's kinda depressing, but it's still gotta be done. verysad
 Quoting: Confederate Lady 16056318

Geez, some people need to start learning how to cook and eat cheaper! Make your own freakin' soup out of fresh ingredients - have you ever checked the sodium level on a can of Campbell's soup?! Not to mention all the other chemicals they add.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8264381

I know but sometimes convenience of a quick can of soup beats going out for fast food. Sometimes there are just tradeoffs once in a while.

And a roast in the crockpot with a package of onion soup mix and a can of mushroom soup on top is sooo good! Yes, it can be made from scratch but this is quick for people who just don't have time to get everything together and want something good when they get home from work. It also works for someone who just can't cook. And it is better than McDonald's.

And look for sales and stock up on soups as well.

I was in Save a Lot(discount grocery) today in Delaware--bought 4 cans garbonzo beans to make hummous-75c each--and a carton of old fashioned oats, 40 ounces, %2.39.
Everyone else in the store had a full cart and was using a "SNAP" card--as I left, the guy in line in front of me who spent $137 of taxpayer EBT money on a lot of junk/prepared food was driving away in a new Mercedes with temp tags--I guess if the taxpayer is buying your groceries, you can "afford" a big car payment.

I mean, people just need to learn how to shop around. If you are trying to save money just eat whatever the hell is on sale. I never buy shit when it is overpriced, no matter how much I want to eat it.

If my greek yogurt if 1.99 instead of $1 because it goes on sale I wont buy it. That's the great thing about eating, it is very optional. You don't have to eat specific things every damn day

And I wouldn't buy skim milk. Take a gallon of whole milk and mix it with a gallon of water. It will taste like skim milk. I stretch whole milk buy mixing a quart of water for every gallon. No one knows the difference. There are no young children here that need whole milk so everyone here gets to drink their milk but it ends up costing less and tasting pretty much the same.

Fresh Green Pepper was $1.99lb...now $3.99lb.
<Green Peppers are 2 for $1 right now at Sprouts, it is EVEN cheaper at Mexican markets>

Canned tomato juice was $0.99 a can...now $2.29 a can.
< I dont buy canned tomato juice but I'm pretty sure I always see them for .99 at nearly any store >

I guess what Im trying to say is.. Im not sure what you are trying to prove. If you are sincerely paying these ridiculous prices you need to stop shopping at Whole Foods or Bristol Farms (unless of course you are willing to pay those prices, but you obviously aren't because you are complaining). I hope my post has allowed you to see the REAL prices of today.

The prices he listed are accurate prices for Canadians.

Re: I found an 8+ year old grocery store recipt on the weekend. Wow...
A few months back I found a receipt in my pickup truck from 1989.
The purchase was cantaloupe at .39 cents a pound.
I am not sure what is now but it a lot more than 39 cents.

Not sure what's more shocking the cantelope price/lb. Or that you're driving a 1989 pickup truck, c'mon it's 23 yrs old it must be falling apart?? No??

Yeah, in some parts of the world (even the good ol' USA) people do not have the financial assets to purchase a new vehicle every few years.

I wouldn't think they'd have the money to keep it maintained let alone keep it on the road. I'm only asking cause I speak from experience I had a 94' pickup up until mid 2000's and man did that thing cost me a hell of a lot of debt notes to keep on truckin

Really depends on the vehicle and whether you are able to do your own wrenching or not. Not having to let some shyster mechanic screw you out of all your money makes maintaining a vehicle a LOT cheaper!
It is, to me, sad how fast people forget the FOUNDATIONS of our fine country! This country was built by an armed population capable of fending for themselves, and will be lost by couches full of potato-sheeple riding their 52" HD-LEDTV's into the orwellian sunset. :(
