What you need to realize with telescopes and cameras that in order for them to capture those awesome star pictures you see, is that they leave the mirror open for extended exposures, which gradually collect more and more light that the human eye cannot see. These cameras used in the jump were set on low exposure times in order to capture still movement, not extended. If it was extended you would just see a giant blur, because the base was consistently moving. You really just have to understand how photography works to understand capturing light. The whole scene is properly exposed to capture the immediate area of importance. Stars were not important. |

Your eye can see much more contrast than even the best HD cameras made. When a camera exposure or iris is set to properly illuminate and highlight a given subject, the contrast prevents the lighter or more fine particles to get "squashed." G Go outside at night and shoot the streetlight and see if you can still see the stars in your video... for that matter any planes or other lights. The camera cannot expose for both. The camera was set to properly illuminate the jumper and the capsule he climbed out of. The reflection of the capsule as well as the light on the earth alone will prevent the camera from "seeing" any stars at the same time. Simple video physics. If I don't aim... no one can say I missed. |

So, here's the link: [link to scienceray.com] Draw your own conclusion from this... Dear reader, we need not draw our own conclusions, as one of the many like-minded posted replies to the article that OP presents, leaves us with no doubt as to why the article is unreliable.... Quote follows; Michael I. Morgan Says... On November 7, 2009 at 4:46 pm The article above is, unfortunately, totally askew. The only thing relating to star viewing that is not experienced in “outer” (non-atmospheric) space is the twinkling effect, since the air is responsible for refracting starlight before it reaches the observer on the ground. Above the atmosphere, stars are not only visible, they are significantly brighter than when viewed from Earth. As for stars not appearing in “moon” photos, this is a matter of the camera exposure and/or the sensor being dominated or overwhelmed by a very large or intense light source, as in the Sun or – just perhaps – stage floodlamps. I wonder who would be educated enough to use the scientific and technical language seen, yet produce such a potentially confusing conglomeration of false and inaccurate information. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25614439 you need a very long exposure time to record stars. try with your own iphone hd cam or whatever good cam you have. idiot I actually think you're the "idiot" for not understanding how camera's work.. It's all very simple, spend a day with an SLR (non-digital) camera, then go develop the film yourself in a dark room. The next day, learn from your mistakes with a digital camera. It's how i learned.
