The brain is extremely complex and there are zillions of different inner experiences people have. For example, synesthesia is a brain condition where people see colors when they hear sounds. Science now understands that Synesthesics really do experience seeing colors when they hear sounds, because their brains are wired up a little abnormally. Sort of like some of the nerves coming from their ears manage to stimulate their visual cortex.

Maybe you are sort of in the same boat as a synesthesic person and that is just the way your brain works and you might have to live with it if you can. As the study of the brain progresses more will gradually be understood regarding experiences such as yours and how to deal with them.

Sometimes there are advantages to these "non-normal" brain functioningss. For example, synesthesia helps some people remember things better that 'normal' people, so I've read, because, take a person's name, they can be hard to remember when you just meet someone, but the synesthesic may have a color that was experienced when they heard the name and that gives them an additional link to help in recalling the name.

You sound rational, so maybe you can learn to deal with how your brain works, by observing what happens and trying to understand. I would certainly avoid anything that makes the condition worse, like any foods or drugs. Also pay attention to the lunar cycle, which can correlate closely with hormonal cycles. Some conditions can be more troublesome at certain points of the lunar cycle, and if you know that, then you can be more careful at those times.
