Meningitis Outbreak Just Got a Whole Lot Worse: All Drugs Made at New England Compounding Pharmacy Maybe Infected!

Federal regulators broadened their warning to doctors Monday, raising questions about the potential risk of infection from other injectable drugs made by the specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts linked to the burgeoning fungal-meningitis outbreak.

The Food and Drug Administration said it received reports of three new cases of infections tied to two additional products made by the New England Compounding Center (NECC). One involves the steroid triamcinolone acetonide, which is different from the steroid implicated in the existing meningitis cases. A patient who may now have meningitis received an epidural of the medication, the FDA said.

The other two cases involve a medication that is injected into the coronary arteries to temporarily paralyze the heart during open-heart and transplant surgery. Two patients who received the medication, called cardioplegic solution, during heart-transplant surgery, subsequently developed fungal infections, the agency said.

As a result of the cases, the sterility of any injectable drugs made by the NECC, including ones used in eye and heart surgery, “are of significant concern and out of an abundance of caution, patients who received these products should be alerted to the potential risk of infection,” the agency said in a statement posted on its Web site.

Fungus infections from Aspergillis, one fungus linked to the meningitis outbreak, were reported in two transplant patients who received cardioplegic solution from NECC, the FDA said. Cardioplegic solution is used to induce paralysis of the heart during open-heart surgery.

The other fungus linked to the meningitis outbreak is Exserohilum, which the CDC says may not be easily detectable. A patient with a negative fungal test is not in the clear, officials have said.

A second steroid manufactured by New England Compounding Center has been linked to another potential meningitis infection, U.S. regulators said.

A different steroid, methylprednisolone acetate, used as an injection for back pain from the Framingham, Massachusetts-based pharmacy has been tied to a fungal meningitis outbreak that has led to 214 infections in 15 U.S. states, killing 15 people.

The second steroid, triamcinolone acetonide, is used to treat skin conditions that result in itching, redness, dryness, and inflammation, according to the National Institutes of Health. The patients received the medication through an epidural injection.

So if someone received an injection with tainted drugs, what is the longest it would take for symptoms of infection to show up? My son had surgery and I'm not sure what he was given, but it was nearly 2 mos. ago, so I'm assuming we have nothing to worry about? This does make me want to alert some friends who have had recent injections....

Go to CDC.gov they have a list of facilities where they know the tainted drugs were given it is sorted by state. Also I have heard there is a six month window.

Well, how would it happen "accidently"? I see no evidence out there for that side of the question.

It could happen many ways in the plant. Improper sterilizaton of equipment, faulty valving, etc. Someone could sabatoge the equipment also. I thought that's what you were saying.

My mom gets injections each month in her eyes. I called and talked to her doctor concerning it. Thank the Lord their medicines are made by another company and no where associated with this crap.

The report is also say eyedrops (she takes 4 typses daily)so I still need to talk to the pharmacy.

If she happens to be infected. I will drive personally to their main head quarters...I will not say what would happen.

Hope these guys don;t make medicine for the plexus nerve blocks... I get those... I used to get the steroid as well but that stopped... a long time ago....

My take is the ELITE is cracking down on organic and Compounding companies, because they want the bad stuff to be injested by you. So they contaminated the supply they use and are trying to ban compounding pharmacy's so that you use their modified drugs.

That corporation is going to receive Justus, they will put in jail and likely give that corporation a very long sentence and make an example of it so other corporations will know they can't get away with deeds like this.

Sounds like it to me. Unless they were making sure to add a pinch of fungus powder to every fucking vial of medicine they made, the only way this could have happened is for the actual manufacturers of the steroid compound to have contaminated their entire stock.
