Solar Winds Create Water on the Moon and other non-atmospheric bodies - Is this why COMETS are Icy???
This is just crazy cool. Solar winds produces water on airless bodies, in other words, celestial bodies without atmospheres. So, this would include planets like Mercury, as well as some of the larger asteroids. They discovered this while researching how water was on the moon. It was thought that only comets were responsible for water being found on places like the moon. But it's the SUN as well!

University of Tennessee study confirms solar wind as source for moon water

Three years ago University of Tennessee, Knoxville, researchers helped to discover water on the surface of the moon. Now, they are piecing together the origin of that water: solar wind. A new study confirms solar wind as a source for water embedded in the lunar surface...

... This year, Yang Liu, research assistant professor, and Taylor have confirmed solar wind as the source for water on the outside-by depositing positively charged hydrogen atoms, or protons, onto its surface, allowing it to combine with the moon's oxygen to create water.

"When those protons hit the lunar surface with enough force, they break apart oxygen bonds in soil materials to join together and form water,"
said Liu...

... The researchers discovered that most of the water in the agglutinates came from solar wind. Confirming the solar-wind- induced hydroxyl emphasizes the possibility of finding water on the surface of other similar airless bodies.

"This means water likely exists on Mercury and on the asteroids such as Vesta or Eros further within our solar system," said Liu.

"These planetary bodies have very different environments, but all have potential to produce water. The finding also implies solar-wind contributes to water ice in lunar poles."

Very nice Kinga.

This is awesome...

Hydrogen is the lightest element. It is by far the most abundant element in the universe and makes up about about 90% of the universe by weight.

Hydrogen as water (H2O) is absolutely essential to life and it is present in all organic compounds. Hydrogen is the lightest gas. Hydrogen gas was used in lighter-than-air balloons for transport but is far too dangerous because of the fire risk (Hindenburg).

It burns in air to form only water as waste product

and if hydrogen could be made on sufficient scale from other than fossil fuels then there might be a possibility of a hydrogen economy.

Note that while hydrogen is normally shown at the top of the Group 1 elements in the periodic table, the term "alkaline metal" refers to the Group 1 elements from lithium downwards and not hydrogen.

Ever since late 99 I thought that comets accumulated ice through some type of electro-magnetic relationship.

They have to be accumulating mass somehow, or else they would burn out.

It was that comet discovered around that time...before hale-bop.

I can't remember the name of it. But at the time I was interested in it and read about the conventionally accepted dustball comet theory...these dudes were challenging it and used this comet as a platform to discuss the alternate theory.

Perhaps they have a rock like core and it is converted to ice through solar winds.

Thus the core slowly shrinks while the exterior of ice/core particles is always expanding.

Just rambling.

The core must be iron rich...or composed of some type of magnetic mineral like magnetite.

Maybe some polymorph of magnetite. Super condensed.

The chemical reaction between the core structure and the radiation must involve Hydrogen being bonded with the Oxygen molecules within the core.

Is this an endothermic or exothermic reaction?

Probably endothermic because you have plenty of radiation bombarding the open system.

But now I am venturing into geochemistry which I failed the first time.

Re: Solar Winds Create Water on the Moon and other non-atmospheric bodies - Is this why COMETS are Icy???
Thread: How do you create water in Space? - Just Add STARLIGHT - Yes, Stars create water, the building block of LIFE...

Ummm...this is a huge finding...

I'll give you a brief overview. They find this dying star, and surrounding the star is a GIGANTIC cloud of hot water vapor. Well, this type of star is called a carbon star, and they do not produce large volumes of water. So, the brilliant scientists thought the water cloud must have come from the sun evaporating comets (I know, that is a SHIT-TON of comets), or they thought the water vapor cloud may have come from dwarf planets in the star's vicinity.

But now they think they've figured it out.

Now, Herschel’s PACS and SPIRE instruments have revealed that the secret ingredient is ultraviolet light, because the water is too hot to have come from the destruction of icy celestial bodies. (the comets, the dwarf planets)...

...The superb sensitivity of Herschel’s instruments has revealed that the water around IRC+10216 varies in temperature from about –200°C to 800°C, which indicates that it is being formed much closer to the star than comets can stably exist...

The star...IRC+10216 is a red giant star, hundreds of times the Sun’s size, although only a few times its mass. If it replaced the Sun in our Solar System, it would extend beyond the orbit of Mars.

It is 500 light years away and while it is barely detectable at visible wavelengths, even in the largest telescopes, it is the brightest star in the sky at some infrared wavelengths. This is because it is surrounded by a huge envelope of dust that absorbs almost all its visible radiation and re-emits it as infrared light. It is in the envelope that the water vapour has been found. But how did the water get there?

The Herschel (satellite) water detection made the astronomers realise that ultraviolet light from surrounding stars can reach deep into the envelope between the clumps and break up molecules such as carbon monoxide and silicon monoxide, releasing oxygen atoms. The oxygen atoms then attach themselves to hydrogen molecules, forming water.

This is not a plausible hypothesis.

H-O bound energy is 464kJ/mol.
Si-O bound energy is 621kJ/mol.

That means that a free proton wont strip that oxygen from silicate rocks.

Even though the high energy protons coming from the Sun have enough energy to form H-O from silicates, the then free silicon will READILY react with water.

That is the very reason you can not find free silicon in nature. Instead, most part of crustal rocks, on Earth and the Moon by common history, are silicates or oxygen and silicon bound together.

Geochemistry

Geochemistry is the science that uses the tools and principles of chemistry to explain the mechanisms behind major geological systems such as the Earth's crust and its oceans. The realm of geochemistry extends beyond the Earth, encompassing the entire solar system and has made important contributions to the understanding of a number of processes including mantle convection, the formation of planets and the origins of granite and basalt

Electrochemistry is a branch of chemistry that studies chemical reactions which take place in a solution at the interface of an electron conductor (a metal or a semiconductor) and an ionic conductor (the electrolyte), and which involve electron transfer between the electrode and the electrolyte or species in solution.

Comets contain several types of ice, not only water. CO2, ammonia and methane ices are also common.

Comets formed further from the Sun, thus, like the gas giants, they contain a more proportion of volatiles. These volatiles become ices in the freezing depths of space where they spend most of their time.
