Dogs in a SHTF scenario
I have heard a lot of people say that dogs would just be an inconvenience during a SHTF scenario. But I think they could be very useful even a pack of small dogs could be trained to hunt small game and provide a heads up if an intruder enters your encampment.

Our ancestors were helped tremendously by dogs. So I don't think they would be an inconvenience.

A border collie or a small shepherd would be the best friend you could have in a shtf scenorio.
Just look at all the shtf movies, there is all ways a shepherd or a border collie.

Re: Dogs in a SHTF scenario
Have read some bad stories about dogs having to be let go once people no longer could feed them. Then dogs would form a pack and attack anything that moves due to hunger.
Guess its fine as long as you are sure you will have food to last for them,

Re: Dogs in a SHTF scenario
There is a reason the dog is called 'mans best friend'. They have an instinctual loyalty to humans, provide a VERY good alarm system, can hunt for you/help you hunt, and in a pinch make good eats! All around, I would say that dogs should be at the TOP of the SHTF list...

It is, to me, sad how fast people forget the FOUNDATIONS of our fine country! This country was built by an armed population capable of fending for themselves, and will be lost by couches full of potato-sheeple riding their 52" HD-LEDTV's into the orwellian sunset. :(

I agree 100%. Dogs are a luxury nowadays. We have them for companionship, for the most part (I know there are exceptions -- herding dogs, seeing eye dogs, police dogs). Long ago, dogs were a practical necessity for humans. They helped us hunt (as you said), and then protected our homes (whether those homes were huts, caves, etc.). So yes, dogs will be even MORE important than ever if there's a STHF scenario. And their unconditional love, loyalty and friendship doesn't hurt, either. :)

As long as you can keep them fed. Good luck with that.

True, but in the distant past, it was a symbiotic relationship. The dogs would come near human encampments, and get scraps of food day after day. As a consequence, these dogs would come to think of this particular human encampment as "their turf" (where they get food), so they'd protect it from intruders, be they animal or human. So it's a win/win, symbiotic relationship.

Ya, the cats help keep the rodent (virus vectors) population at bay. Cats have been credited with helping to end the Black Plague in Europe by eating the rats which carried the deadly flea-born disease.

Re: Dogs in a SHTF scenario
Damn, I plan for the feeding of my dogs just as I do members of my family for a SHTF scenario, to do otherwise is assinine.
