Snip:
Meanwhile, pressure building beneath locals who live above the salt dome, sometimes feeling like they are "walking on jello" and sometimes jolted from continuing quakes have sparked human rights concerns regarding security, especially for those experiencing these intrusions occurring out of the mandatory evacuation zone...

I feel so sorry for the people who have had to evacuate around the sinkhole.
They never get any good news.

Options few for displaced residents

Yeah, I have an update,

Its Fucking Huge, Its out of control, its unstoppable, and no-one knows what to do..

So, those few things listed can sum it up till, well, it either explodes, or overflows and ruins everything in its path.

It could even possibly give 5 dudes a job for the next 30 years, just maintaining the overflow..

The disturbing part, is the methane plate that is melting, or wait, it could also be the sinkhole inching towards the 1 million barrels of liquid butane, or, shit wait, maybe even the gas that is igniting in peoples sinks and showers.,

*shrugs,

take your pick

Officials: ‘Large chunks’ were knocked off salt dome when cavern collapsed — Giant sinkhole now getting deeper

[...] Dennis Landry, a local resident and businessman, said before Thanksgiving “gas remains in the aquifer, and a little crude oil is still coming out of the top of sinkhole. Texas Brine contractors laid boom around the sinkhole to keep any oil or other fuel from escaping.” He said “Texas Brine and Shaw Environmental are flaring natural gas off from several wells they drilled. The sinkhole was growing in size but it seems to have stabilized in recent weeks.”

But things don’t stay still for long at the hole. After Thanksgiving, the hole burped up vegetative debris on Nov. 27, and hydrocarbons rose from beneath the hole, according to the Assumption Parish Police Jury. Trees fell in that day and the next. Boom was repositioned to contain hydrocarbons on the surface.

Texas Brine said sinkhole measurements taken on Nov. 14 and reported on Nov. 27 showed the hole had deepened by 30 feet to 145 feet since Nov. 1. [...]

As for tremors, Landry said “I haven’t felt them, but other people have. U.S. Geological Survey experts tell us the Aug. 3 collapse of the cavern knocked off large chunks of salt, causing tremors. USGS says the tremors are internal or localized and were not caused by broader seismic activity.” [...]

Deadly gas found in salt cavern below giant sinkhole — Official Reveals: Now the cavern can’t be plugged and Hydrogen Sulfide will have to be removed as it flows (VIDEO)

OEP and DNR, along with Texas-Brine tested the flow line in the cavern again Friday to see if the gas is present; that is when the low levels of Hydrogen Sulfide was discovered.

Because the gas was detected, the cavern cannot be plugged and the gas will have to be removed as it flows. “They’ll have to bring in scrubber units and put those devices in the line and scrub out the hydrogen sulfide as well as remove the hydrogen sulfide and dispose of it in the proper manner,” said [Assumption Parish Director of OEP John Boudreaux.]

Dangers of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and the Louisiana Sinkhole

According to Assumption Parish Police Jury;

Texas Brine has reported to parish officials low levels of H2S coming from the cavern well. DNR, Shaw representatives, and the OEP Director went to the site to validate Texas Brine’s reading and found no levels of H2S on their monitors. Readings will be repeated in the morning when Texas Brine flows the cavern well again. Should H2S be present at that time, appropriate actions will be taken. We will keep you updated.

Please note that no H2S readings were picked up on the community air monitors.

[link to assumptionla.wordpress.com]

The presence of H2S in an oilfield and, if exposed to the gas during oil and gas production, its possible impacts on human health, is a potential concern for potential UGS operators. H2S is a toxic, colourless gas that is odourless at high concentrations but has a smell of rotten eggs in low concentrations. Because H2S is heavier than air, it tends to accumulate in low-lying areas. It is an extremely poisonous gas and a few seconds of exposure in concentrations of anywhere between 750 and 10,000 ppm can prove lethal to people and animals. However, the effect of H2S depends on duration, frequency and intensity of exposure and the susceptibility of the individual

Giant Sinkhole: Hydrogen Sulfide is in the oil — Residents reporting “really acute health impacts” (AUDIO)

Dangerous hydrogen sulfide gas was detected Friday in fumes coming from crude oil drawn from an investigatory well tapped into a Texas Brine Co. LLC salt cavern in northern Assumption Parish, company and parish officials said.

The discovery of hydrogen sulfide Thursday from a methane stream flowing out of the well forced a shutdown and subsequent testing Friday of the well between the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities, officials said.

Officials were trying to determine the source of the hydrogen sulfide gas, also known as H2S. They want to continue using the well to remove oil and gas from the failed salt cavern and perform other testing.

The Louisiana Office of Conservation ordered Texas Brine to abate one of the suspected consequences of the failed underground cavern.

Company officials said Friday Texas Brine is looking at equipment to scrub the possibly sulfur-laden oil and put it in sealed transport containers to prevent any H2S releases.

“They are looking into ways to address the hydrogen sulfide issue and the sulfur in the oil,” said Sonny Cranch, spokesman for the Houston-based company.
