Re: unpicked delicious expensive fruit left on trees to rot..and people hungry in the world..something aint right
This is why,,,

Free pickers damage orchard

...Within days, the peaches were gone but people kept coming. The Schanaman’s posted clear signs stating the peaches were gone, the orchard was closed, and no trespassing was allowed.

Despite the signs, many still knocked on the Schanaman’s door, angry that the peaches were gone. One person threw rocks. Others drove their vehicles into the orchard, hitting a tree and breaking pipes, which will cost more to replace than was given in donations for the peaches. “It cost us a lot to give away free peaches,” Marilyn said.

People also took apples, which were never offered to the public, and began picking through the neighbor’s peach orchard as well. “Imagine my embarrassment,” Marilyn said.

“I’m just really disappointed,” she said, “90 percent of those who came were great but that other 10 percent were just crazy.”...

Organic..they dont bother spraying..land is very fertile everything grows..

All around us fruit trees full of fruit..expensive fruit...and tbe grou d covered with rotting fruit..fields and fields

I was standing there just thinking

-howmuch nature gives us
-and how many people are hungry while fruit rots..or fields in other parys of tbe world are not planted

A bit lf organization..good will..proper administration..effective food supply distribution and no one should go hungry in my opinion..

There would be enough food for everyone in my opinion

Maybe they would allow a church group to pick the fruit & then it could be distributed through charity sources to people in need.

That would avoid the abusive frenzy the other poster spoke of.

Re: unpicked delicious expensive fruit left on trees to rot..and people hungry in the world..something aint right
My in laws are peach farmers and i have asked them why there is rotten fruit on the ground. They go through te orchard and thin the fruit a few times and that thinning usually gets just thrown on the ground. They have a contract with Dole, and Dole only wants peaches of a specific size, so at harvest, the specific fruit is all that is picked. The rest
Is left on the tree to rot.
I also think it is a waste. My in laws dont mind if i bring friends over to pick the left over fruit. We pick for us, and we pick for the local food bank.

Lets face it..from a governmental position..every bit of unused land could be cultivated..veggies..fruit trees planted..especially in low income urban areas..or drug and crime infected areas..study shows how this has positive effects n the commu ity as a whole

Unwanted surplus fruit could be picked and distributed to soup kitchens etc.

So much can be done instead of figuring out what new wars to start

Yes, its sad that we need church to instill civilized behavior in people. In a church people are more accountable and have higher expectations,

That won't work because they are low income for a reason...they want trash food and drugs, not healthy and nutritious food...they would just tear up the gardens and let the weeds overtake it...

The fruit is not going to waste, it will fall and keep the ground fertile...it's there for those that cultivate and WORK the land for their own benefit...

Re: unpicked delicious expensive fruit left on trees to rot..and people hungry in the world..something aint right
You can't help some cultures. We tried for ages to instil civilization in Africa and it failed. Even Obama's brother said the worst thing to happen to Kenya and Uganda was the white colonialists LEAVING. Now the same thing is happening in South Africa.

Whites need to realize that some groups can't be propped up forever. We need to cordon off sections of Africa and other areas of earth and let the primal type people evolve for a few hundred thousand more years. Then maybe they'll be ready.

A prime example of forced indoctrination to high level civilization is the American black. They have been hand fed every single possibility and they still fail miserably. The ones who made some money playing with a ball usually squander their wealth or end up in jail for something stupid.

Giving more donations to developing cultures will only hurt them. That has been more than proven.

Re: unpicked delicious expensive fruit left on trees to rot..and people hungry in the world..something aint right
With the exception of small farms with livestock, there is usually lots of food that is grown and never harvested. I've seen entire fields of things like berries, squash, and cauliflower plowed under without being picked.

Farmers raise crops with the hopes of making a profit. But sometimes the processor won't buy them or won't buy the entire crop. Or they will, but at a price that is lower then it would cost to employ people to pick them.

Sadly, sometimes we only find out after the crop has been harvested, that they won't buy anymore. gaah

This is one of the reasons why I switch out of the mode of selling to processors and now sell to farmers market and on the family fruit stand. Yes, we still have unsold fruit and vegetables, but that becomes feed for the animals. Once I have all the fences completed, I will be able to turn the livestock into each field when its done being harvested, so that they can clean up any of the unpicked crops.

If you see a tree that is loaded with fruit that is going to waste, then go knock on the door of the owner. You might be able to get the fruit for cheap or free. But please don't steal the fruit. Many will let you have as much as you want, as long as you ask. It's when you steal, that we get upset. 343

Yes, I'm currently trying to learn about wild food myself. I recommend a book called "Botany in a day" It won't teach you about wild food but it teaches how to identify and categorize the plant families. Once you know the plant family it's much easier to search and identify the specific species.

you don't understand the problem..
money, money, money..

I've asked why we don't have a aquaponic greenhouse in every city and also have state owned farms all growing free food for anyone as well as fruit tree and vines in all parks. Hell, have we free library's and museums but can't have greenhouse's?
The government doesn't want this as it will hurt the economy (grocery stores), thus they would rather have a)tax payers pay peoples food b)have them starve.
They only care about themselves and how to make THEIR world better, aka museums.

I have an abundance of apples every fall and cherries in the spring. I have asked the food pantry if they will take it and they said NO- they wont take any fresh fruit! WTF??? So, I bag it up and give it to everyone i can...sometimes leaving bags of apples outside my office with a "FREE" sign on them. But it is a pain in the butt to pick all the stuff. Church groups wont come out pick, i have called them. I agree, it is sinful to waste. Luckily the deer eat most of it.

You better start canning all those fruits, before they go rotten.

If all those hungry people were to organise themselves, the farmer would donate the fruits & they could have a canning party. Would also bring the community members together.
