Serves them right. College is for the weak minded who cannot carve their own path to success without being indoctrinated by overgrown spoiled commie fags called "professors".

Here's a trick from a private education that i paid for waiting tables...use it...abuse it!

Every one of us, be it the guy with the Ferrari or the Drug Addict huffing crack in the inner city before arrest, has a certain amount of disposal income or you'd be dead. Now YOU in the shit take a small portion of that disposable income...let's say 5 $'s - and go out in the cruel week ahead and turn it 25$'s legal. Try it!!! It is amazing!!!

Re: 50% of the College Grads Cannot Find Jobs...
First of all, getting a Liberal Arts degree is not useless. If you think that the purpose of a Liberal Arts degree is to make you fit for a trade/industry/commercial service then you are misunderstanding the point entirely. The purpose of such an education is to make you a more intellectually developed citizen. And while it's true that self-education can be as good or better than "schooling," it simply is not the same as a rigorous Liberal Arts education. If you think that studying English, Philosophy, History, etc. is useless, then it probably would be for you. And I wouldn't to have had people like you in my class anyway.

That being said, unless you're swimming in money, taking out 100k in loans to pay to attend college is both foolish and unnecessary. I lucked out and earned a scholarship to a private liberal arts school, but my brother and sister both managed to basically pay their way through state school -- it's entirely possible -- and their educations were probably comparable (a few courses excepted) in quality to mine.

For those of you saying "go be a plumber" -- not everyone can be a plumber. We still need a lot of people in a lot of offices, believe it or not, but many those jobs have gone from requiring a college degree and minimal experience (with on the job training) and paying 30k+ to start to requiring a bachelors + masters + 3-5 years experience and paying 24k. Those positions are still considered "entry level" and often don't have benefits, even though the job reqs and responsibility are commensurate with a fairly experienced worker. Employers are squeezing employees because they can. Certainly some small businesses are squeezing because they have to in order to survive, but many larger companies are rolling in record cash flow and profits, yet demanding more and more for less and less pay. That's how it goes... and everybody knows...

Get a degree in anything and you'll have to compete with 50+ people for the same job.

Once you discover that you aren't going to find salary jobs, you'll find that you're over-qualified for everything else. No manager in his right mind is going to hire a potential replacement.

Fucked up, isn't it?

"Silly question ... what job does one get with LA degree?"

Well my first job out of college was working as a Product Developer for a major international tour operator -- so I did a lot of contracting with overseas suppliers and, personally, developed and sold about a million dollars in tours in the first year (the profit margin was about 11.5% and I made 30k, netting a tidy profit for my boss). People with a liberal arts degree from a rigorous program (people sometimes forget that the liberal arts include science, math, and languages in addition to philosophy, English, history, etc.) can learn to do almost anything. They have demonstrated the ability to work with complex / ambiguous / complicated information. So in answer to your question, we get whatever job someone will give us. I've never disappointed an employer -- over the long run at least :)

Re: 50% of the College Grads Cannot Find Jobs...
i left school at 16 sat on my ass and got stoned for 2.5 years then started working on building sites as a laborer for 2 years then i got a an apprenticeship i am now 24 with six months left to go then i have a job for life in every country on the planet and even if i cant get a job in my trade i would sure get a job doing semi skilled work.

as for my friend Katie, stayed in school till she was 18 went to university for 4 years and got a law degree she now works at Marks and Spencers full time she would be better off now if she left school at 16 and went to work

true story
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25779450

Many of these college grads feel they should be making top dollar with no work experience but they have a degree. I worked in high school & during college so I have some work experience when I received my degree. I had references that said I had a strong work ethic. These people who can't find a job just are not looking or they are being selective. There are jobs, they just have low pay and may not be in your field.

And to get where they are a person had better be strong in math. The people I know that were strong in the sciences were like that as children. It is something I believe a person has a talent in and just needs some education to get them started. It is not something a person can just become. You are a 'math' geek or you aren't. Same for artists, people in sports, acting etc. Find your strong points and build upon them.
