Who was the original founder of the Templars?
 Quoting: Open Your Eyes

I reference the newsletter from the site of Sanctus Germanus.. it explains the influence by the Brotherhood of Light. [link to www.mynewsletterbuilder.com]
The reference in the newsletter is to the "Masons" commonly understood as the "scientific" and "enduring" membership that is in existence today.

As Umberto Eco once wrote, “The Templars have something to do with everything” asserting that the Templars have played a part in all of history, somewhere along the line. However, some of the popular Templar stories are, in fact, mere legends and the artistic talent of the author concerned. Therefore, we have only included known historic fact, and any legendary or fictional characters are highlighted as such.

The Order was founded in Jerusalem in 1118 by Hughes de Payens, Geoffrey de St. Omer and seven other French knights* following a call to arms from Pope Urban II. The Order was consecrated to the protection of pilgrims and the defense of the Holy Land. The founding knights took monastic vows and were known as "The Poor Knights of Christ".

* The names of the other seven original knights were: Andre de Monthard; Andre de Gundomare; Payen (Nivard) de Montdidier (Montdesir); Archambaud de Saint-Aignan; Geoffrey Bissor (Bisol/Bissot); Godefroy de St. Omer; Roffal/Rossal (Roral/Roland) (Different books give varying spellings of these names so some of the variations are shown here.)
King Baldwin II, the French King of Jerusalem (1118-1131) installed the Order in a part of his Palace, on the site of Solomon's Temple, for their residence, stables and armoury, from which it took its name of Knights of the Temple or 'Templars'.
