Five second rule? Germs can get on food in under five seconds

Think about this the next you eat something off the floor!

ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta)- Most people are familiar with the famed “five second rule,” which states that if dropped food is picked up off the floor within five seconds of contact, it is still safe to consume.

Though a popular belief, a new study has found that germs often win the race.

The study, co-funded by Clorox and conducted by researchers at San Diego State University, found that germs do in fact attach themselves to edible items within that amount of time, the McClatchy-Tribune News Service is reporting.

Have always eaten food dropped on the floor and I'm still alive and healthy.

This is is just mainstream media fear mongering.

I remember a study a few years ago done by a university using candy. They found the candy could sit for more than 5 seconds without picking up germs. They weren't sponsored by a cleaning company which makes me suspicious of the findings.

I've always used the five second rule and I've never had any problems.

5-second dropped-food rule debunked

Good news for sloppy chowhounds - that food you dropped on the floor is still safe to eat 30 seconds later.

In the interest of culinary science, student researchers at Connecticut College conducted exacting experiments in the dining hall and the snack bar to see how long it takes for food dropped on the floor to attract rogue bacteria, the New London college said in a press release today.

Too much emphasis on hygeine these days.
If you never come into contact with germs, you won't build an immunity, and will fall sick much easier.

When we ere kids, we used to drink from hosepipes, we would make mud-pies, and actually TASTE them - we ate fruit straight from the tree, and if we dropped a piece of chocolate, we picked it up and ate it - and only stopped to rinse something if it had hairs or visible dust on it.

I'm 48, and bever had a serious illness in my life.

All this hygeine hysteria is weakening the human race.
