Actually, if you look at politics in early America, it wasn't uncommon for POTUS or Congress to come near blows.

As a matter of fact, one of the presidents (I think it was Andrew Jackson) got punched in the jaw by a congressman. Of course, security was nonexistent in those days. The White House was open to the public all hours of the day. You could literally walk in there and knock on the Oval Office door if you wanted do!
