My kids go to a government school - they can't write or read in cursive | |

I may be wrong, but I think that when I write in cursive I access a different part of my brain - if the right brain is artistic, then I'd say I use my right brain for cursive. I can "see the forest" when I write in cursive. I can't do that when I print. When I print, I get extremely focused. So whoever invented cursive writing may have had a reason for it. I wrote a short sentence in cursive and handed it back to my child, who promptly looked puzzled and said "what's that?". After several back and forth exchanges where we both were confused, I realized she couldn't read cursive. I forgot that our government school system quit teaching kids how to write in cursive. Anonymous Coward User ID: 10562199 United States 10/19/2012 12:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Folks, this isn't a matter of cursive being outdated. Cursive is a mark of penmanship. That you can actually write, not type. Writing used to be a privilege. As well as reading. I graduated from HS in 2010 with kids who couldn't even read! They slowly dumbing down kids. The only reason why reading hasn't died like penmanship is because of the internet. Without that reading and writing would be a thing of the past. This is so much deeper than outing an outdated way of writing. This is dumbing down the next generations. Open your eyes and look past the surface. Quoting: NalloArt Wow, you sure extrapolated a whole lot from a story about a kid who doesn't know what cursive writing is. Besides, kids still write in print script. I fail to see how not knowing cursive means they 'can't actually write.' The ramifications are beyond anything we can imagine. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1508496 United States 10/19/2012 12:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | BF and I are the same age. He went to private school in Atlanta, I went to public school in south Georgia. I can read and write in cursive and have pretty excellent penmanship. He cannot write in cursive AT ALL. Not even his own signature--he just draws some squiggles on the backs of checks. He can't read a lot of cursive either to the point that he just has me read notes and letters to him. Its so bizarre. It may also help that both of my Grandmothers loved to write and practiced cursive with me from a young age, but I always remember most of my girlfriends having lovely cursive handwriting growing up and they learned it in school. My bf has mentioned before that when we were younger his school considered it a waste of time to learn cursive as we'd be using computers for everything soon enough. I guess that sort-of makes sense, but seems lazy--I can't help but make the WTF face when someone can't write in/read cursive. |

I can write really quickly without worrying over penmanship as I do with cursive and EVERYONE can read it lol |

I'd actally rather have our kids learn how to read and write in basic handwriting first. Screw cursive. |

Quoting: BANISHED 25855859 You are right about the cursive writing and brain connection. The act of cursive writing creates a conduit from the brain. Whatever you write in cursive, if you are writing for serious reasons, will come from a more informed and creative place in the brain. Printing is an elementary foundation which teaches both alphabet and basic writing. But, when I see adults who only print, their writing usually looks childish and seems to lack any depth. Cursive is one of the most important skills to learn. Computers can't replace it. I've never heard anyone who can write in cursive complain about it. Any school system that doesn't teach it is just plain lazy, and is handicapping those kids for life. |

Keep some mud handy for making cuniform tablets! Cursive is as useless as latin. If your kids can type, they know what the letters are. That means they can print. If they can print, they can communicate. Being able to read cursive will enable a person to read the originals of important historical documents and simply communicate in a form of written language. As for Latin, if you knew Latin, you would understand how much that would benefit you in reading first-hand original documents, understanding the meaning of most words whose root in in Latin and enhancing your ability to speak any of the romance languages. This just proves how uneducated most people are and apparently want the masses to be as they are. |
